SAMUEL. JAMES SPARKS
POWDERLY - Samuel James Sparks, 70, of Powderly, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025 surrounded by loving family. Sam was born December 2, 1954 in Greenville. After graduating from Central City High School in 1973, where he played basketball for his beloved Golden Tide, he continued his education and basketball career at Belmont College with his teammate and life-long friend Tommy Eades. He taught history, health, and physical education for 33 years in Muhlenberg County, where he coached girlsโ€™ basketball at Muhlenberg Central, boysโ€™ basketball at Greenville, and girlsโ€™ and boysโ€™ basketball at Muhlenberg South. After retirement, he continued to serve as a mentor and assistant coach on benches throughout the whole region. His love for basketball was rivaled only by his love for people, foremost being his wife of 50 years, Kathy, and the family that they shared. His greatest joy was getting to be โ€œGagaโ€ to his grandchildren, who he cheered on in every aspect of life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jackie and Grant Taylor Sparks; grandparents, Kenneth and Vera Ferrell Sparks and George T. and Virginia Stringer Taylor; and nephew, Blake Sparks.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Willis Sparks; daughter, Laura (Jeremy) Vincent and Jacklyn (Jonathan) Murphy; grandchildren, Myles Murphy, Izzy Murphy, Lincoln Vincent, Sam Vincent, and Amelia Murphy; brothers, Taylor (Denise) Sparks, Steve (Missy) Sparks, and Jeff (Ginger) Sparks; many beloved nieces and nephews; and all his players, students, co-workers, and friends that he embraced into his heart and family.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 11:00 am in the old Central City High School Gym (Central City Convention Center), with Reverend Laura Sparks Vincent officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin Friday from 4-8 pm and Saturday from 9-10:30 am in the old Central City High School Gym (Central City Convention Center).
The family requests contributions to the Sam Sparks Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers. Contributions may be made to the Sam Sparks Scholarship Fund, c/o Farmers Bank and Trust, P.O. Box 191, Greenville, KY 42345. Envelopes will be available at visitation. Tucker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.tuckerfuneralhomes.com.

PATIENCE NEEDED FOR NEW DRIVERS ON ROAD

BY CRYSTAL WOODRUFF
The Times-Argus

Remember if you will, being a 15 year-old, not-so patiently awaiting that most important of birthdays--No. 16. Itโ€™s the beginning of all of your tomorrows. Itโ€™s the day you can start to learn to drive; and driving is one step closer to freedom.

Now imagine, oh and I can imagine...that that day showed up early and out of the blue. Imagine that one day during your 15th year, much to the surprise of mom and dad, suddenly the waiting was over. No longer did you have to wait for that sweet 16 to arrive, but today was the day.

It was the news that over 56,000 Kentucky 15 year-olds heard on March 25 (for some of them, it was the first time they took notice of any political news).

And they were ready...boy were they ready. It took a couple of weeks for the state to be ready to start testing 15 year-olds, but testing is in full swing now, and teenagers are getting their permits as fast as they can get appointments.

This is on top of every 16 year-old that would have already been taking the test. So basically, the testing sites are slammed.

I was lucky to get my 15 year-old in to take her test last week. I checked the website every day, multiple times a day, for a spot. They open up more spots every weekday morning at 7 a.m. For those still looking, keep checking. Spots sometimes come open in the middle of the day because someone canceled.

Muhlenberg County teens do not have to test in Madisonville. In fact, you can go to any regional testing center. We went to Henderson and the process took a few hours, but we made it through relatively unscathed with proof of permit in hand.

According to Muhlenberg County High School, as of Monday, there were 280 15 year-olds enrolled at the school. That means that soon there will be approximately 280 more permitted drivers on county streets, plus the 16 year-olds, and the birthdays that are coming up, etc.

This is triple the amount of permitted drivers that are normally on the streets of the county. Of course, they arenโ€™t all there yet, but they will be. Iโ€™ll say it again, soon there will be triple the amount of permitted drivers on the roads in Kentucky.

It is more likely than ever that drivers in the county will end up behind a slow car, someone that has their blinker on way too long, riding their brakes down the road or takes an extra second at a stop light. Please remember that you might be behind a permitted driver that is learning and they are doing their very best.

A little bit of patience and humility will go a long way. For the next year or so, let us show our young people that patience. If you need to pass a slow car, please do so safely. Think twice before you pull out a little too closely in front of someone.

For those of you that like to tailgate, you might want to follow the three second rule a little more closely while we have so many permitted drivers on the road. (Actually, follow that rule all the time, if Iโ€™m going to call people out.)

For the parents of the other 15 and 16 year-olds preparing for or driving with permits right now, I wrote this for you and for your children. There will be over 400 pairs of you in Muhlenberg County alone. You are doing great. Keep up the good work.
