Check out this episode of *****naMindPodcast, featuring Chris Martinez, President and co-founder of Kaycha Labs. Hosted by Cynthia Brewer (Senior Vice-President of Kaycha Labs) and Dr. Justin Davis, it is an entertaining and cerebral podcast providing a sophisticated look into cannabis. This episode highlights a lot of the struggles in the analytical side of the industry, whilst also shedding light on the needs for a standardized model. Kaycha labs, being the largest network of cannabis and h**p labs in the nation, has access to large amounts of data which has helped drive our business to the end goal of standardization. With Chris's background in medical devices and patient outcomes, and CEO James Horvath's background in technology, they have developed some remarkable consumer and client platforms. MJ Buddy, an anecdotal data collecting app being one. It allows user reports to help make sense of the subjective effects of cannabis, as well as help direct patients to products that suit their needs, among other patient-focused features. Most impressively however, is the creation of PURE(lims). A proposed reform to the 2018 Farm Bill has made its way to the U.S. House. If passed, the reforms would allow increased THC content in h**p products. The increase would replace the current limit of 0.3% to 1%. The changes would also replace the wording "delta-9" to "total" when referencing cannabinoid limits. In addition, not only would the reforms remove the requirement that products be tested through DEA registered labs, but it would also remove the 10 year ban on prospective applicants with drug-related felonies from acquiring a license. How do you feel this will affect the h**p industry if approved? Any insight from your side of the industry, consumer or otherwise? As always, refer to Kaycha Labs for all your testing needs. Pepsi is doing a trial launch of its new h**p-seed oil infused beverages. Rockstar Unplugged. The product will have only 80 mg of caffeine and will include, in addition to h**p-seed oil, spearmint, lemon balm, and b vitamins. A similar test run of products was ran in Germany last April under the product line "Rockstar Energy + H**p '. The Chief Marketing Officer for PepsiCo has been quoted saying the product is "a combination of herbals that can help us to relax, but not to sleep". H**p and cannabis derived products have been slowly making their way into even some of the most common of products. This is just another sign of the shift in public perception and consumerism regarding cannabis. If companies like PepsiCo are introducing h**p products, who do you think will be the next big product manufacturer to step in? What do you think about h**p products being used in such a way? Washington state may soon change the language regarding pesticides in cannabis. Addressing specifically action levels on pesticides based on the review of new information. It has opened a community comment period on potential amendments to its cannabis quality control regulations. With two proposed amendments, development of the amended language is ongoing in collaboration with the state's Department of Health and Department of Agriculture. The second proposal on amendments being focused on allowing the use of electronic notices as well as license application and appeals through electronic submission. It will be interesting to see how the amendments may change the market. As well as the potential to increase consumer safety. What can you take away from this? The National Football League (NFL) is donating $1 Million towards researching the effects of cannabis on elite athletes. The donation is being given to the University of California San Diego for research on its use in pain management, and to the University of Regina (Canada) for research on neuro-protection from concussions in elite football players. Given the rise of the new Highsman brand (founded by Heisman trophy winner Ricky Williams), Snoop Dogg (A longtime cannabis activist) in the halftime show, and the donation and attention to athlete cannabis use, I think it's safe to say that the NFL is considering changing its stance on cannabis use. Being as influential as they are in American culture, I see this as a big win in cannabis activism and education. What do you think about these advancements? Any insight you may have? Do you think the NFL will ever allow cannabis use amongst its athletes? As always, refer to Kaycha Labs for all your testing needs. Compliance or R&D. Trusted Science. Reliable results.

A proposal to approve adult-use cannabis has just passed the Delaware House Health & Human Development Committee. It will now move to the Appropriations Committee. The bill would allow possession up to 1 ounce of cannabis for those 21 years of age and older. It will not, however, allow for home cultivation. It also includes a 15% retail tax. Agricultural officials have questioned several aspects, including security for outdoor grows and agency jurisdiction. With Rep. Charles Postles voicing concern about teen access. Quoted as having said, "Why would we want to saddle our kids and our grandkids and limit their potential, their lifelong earnings even, by exposing them to this harmful drug that would impair their brain development?" Needless to say, he will be an obstacle in removing the stigma of our favorite green plant. What do you think this will mean for the future of the state? Do you expect to see legalization anytime soon? As always, refer to Kaycha Labs for all your testing needs. Compliance or R&D. Trusted science. Reliable results.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) will begin issuing licenses for adult-use cannabis for cultivators and retailers. The department will be issuing licenses evenly between social equity licenses and general licenses, with the latter being chosen through a lottery process. Social-equity applicants desiring packaging and transport licenses can apply beginning in March. DCP commissioner, Michelle Seagull, was quoted saying in a press release that the initial number of licenses is, "not a cap but a starting point for opening the adult-use cannabis market in an effective, measured and thoughtful way". Welcome to the industry Connecticut. I look forward to seeing how the market evolves in your state. What insight might you have about this update? Any predictions on how it might evolve? In its first year of legal cannabis sales, Arizona has seen sales equal to $1.23 billion by licensed companies. According to the state revenue department, retailers of adult-use cannabis had generated ~$528 million in revenue, with taxes totaling ~$126 million for the year of 2021. This is just another reminder of the economic impact cannabis can have. Given the relatively young market in the state, it will be interesting to see how it evolves. Have any predictions on how? Kenyan Presidential Candidate, Prof George Wajackoyah, has vowed to legalize cannabis if elected. It has garnered both support and ridicule on social media. In statements made by the Roots Party presidential hopeful, some of the main benefits would be growing for export and using the proceeds to benefit Kenyan citizens, deriving medicinal purposes, and the "very resourceful" ma*****na by-products. If elected in August, and intends to push forward, Kenya could join the future global cannabis industry. What do you think this means for the future market? Do you think this is a sign of international cannabis commerce on the horizon? Feel free to drop your insights. As always, refer to Kaycha Labs for all your testing needs. Compliance or R&D. Thailand is in the process of major cannabis reforms. Not only has all parts of the plant besides flowers have been approved for use in cosmetics and food, but they are actively working on legislation for medicinal use and at home cultivation. The restrictions on cultivation include notifying local municipalities and that the use be medical in nature. There is discussion on adult recreational use being legalized in certain areas. Thailand has notoriously had strong laws regarding drug use, and this signifies a major step forward in global cannabis reform. FDA Secretary-General Dr. Paisarn Dunkum was quoted saying, "Of course we won't go to the stage of cannabis cafes, but there are different models for its recreational use in other countries. We'll select the best one that suits our social context." What do you think of this news? How do you feel it will influence the industry moving forward? In-line with the recent reforms put in place by the state of Oregon, a bulletin was released as a part of OLCC's "compliance education". Published on January 20th, the release covers a few specific items, as well as providing resources for further information. The bulletin focuses largely on 3 areas of reform, packaging, testing, and control studies. With all 3 subjects addressing the new edible concentration limits, (an increase in potency limits for individual packaging from 50mg THC to 100mg THC, with a maximum of 10mg THC per edible). While certain processes may require a new control study, there are certain exceptions when the potency of a product stays the same. However, new labeling would still be required. This release highlights some of the biggest inquiries producers and manufacturers have, while providing direction and resources for those who are affected. What do you think of these new regulations? How will they affect your place in the industry? Any insights? As always, refer to Kaycha Labs for all your testing needs. Compliance or R&D. Trusted science. Reliable results.

Officials from local, state and federal levels have gathered for a conference and there were discussions on standards for ma*****na products. Among them were 2 committees of the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM), the Laws and Regulations Committee (LRC), and the Specifications and Tolerance Committee (STC). While neither group's proposals moved forward, they may be refined and presented for approval at another meeting to be held this July. If approved they will be incorporated into federal guidance from the NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Proposals by the LRC included establishing definitions for cannabis and cannabis-containing products, developing a policy for the water activity range, and standardizing packages and labeling requirements. While a proposal from the STC included "scale suitability requirements" for sale of bulk ma*****na to dispensaries. This proposal is still being developed, however, and will be re-structured during later sessions. The purpose of this interim meeting was to review proposals, take comments, and make decisions on whether to move them to vote at the next session in July. This is a big step forward in federal legalization. Not only will this standardization benefit multi-state operators, but it will lay the groundwork for national standards once we have interstate commerce of our favorite plant. What do you think about it? Any insights? As always, refer to Kaycha Labs for all your testing needs. Compliance or R&D. Trusted science. Reliable results.
