A Message From Chief Deputy Josh Summerford

"As another school year has started, I want to ask every parent to take an active role in your child's online life. The internet gives our children incredible opportunities, but it also gives predators a direct path into our homes through a phone or tablet.

Every day, law enforcement sees cases where adults hide behind fake profiles, pretending to be children or teenagers to gain a young person's trust. What starts as a simple conversation can quickly turn into manipulation, exploitation, or blackmail. These offenders are patient, calculated, and know exactly how to target young people.

Talk to your children about who they're communicating with online. Know what apps they're using, and remind them that not everyone is who they claim to be. Most importantly, make sure they know they can speak with a parent, teacher, or school resource officer if someone online asks them to keep secrets, sends inappropriate messages, or begins making threats or demands. The sooner they tell someone, the sooner we can step in, protect them, and work to stop the person responsible.

Our School Resource Officers are much more than deputies assigned to our schools. They build relationships with students, earn their trust, and are there to help long before a situation becomes a crisis. They understand the challenges young people face, including the dangers that exist online. We want every student to know that if something doesn't feel right, your SRO is someone you can talk to. Working alongside parents and teachers, our School Resource Officers are committed to keeping our children safe both inside and outside the classroom."
