📻✨ The Voice of Ebony: A Towering Legacy in a Humble Space

But don’t be fooled by its simplicity. The building houses WVOE 1590 AM — “The Voice of Ebony” — and it tells a story of power, pride, and progress.

🎙️ On April 24, 1962, WVOE became the first Black-owned radio station in rural America, and the first Black-owned station in North Carolina.
Founded under Ebony Enterprises, it gave voice to a community that had long gone unheard — broadcasting gospel, soul, R&B, and uplifting messages that continue to inspire today.

WVOE was only the third Black-owned station in the South and the fifth in the entire country, paving the way long before major cities like New York, L.A., or D.C. saw Black ownership in radio.

💛 More than 60 years later, WVOE is still going strong — still owned by Ebony Enterprises, still broadcasting with purpose, and still representing the voice of a people who refused to be silenced.

So next time you’re near Columbus County, tune your AM dial to 1590.
You just might hear history in the form of music, community, and joy.
