We’re saddened to share the passing of Roger Simon, acclaimed journalist, author and 2006 Illini Media Hall of Fame inductee, who died Thursday at age 78 from pneumonia.
Simon’s remarkable journalism career began right here at The Daily Illini, where he spent four years from 1966–1970, serving as campus editor and executive editor while earning his degree in English.
From the Illini Media newsroom, Simon went on to a decades-long career in journalism, covering major political stories for organizations including the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, U.S. News & World Report, Bloomberg News and Politico. He was also a New York Times best-selling author and a familiar voice on television and radio.
Those who knew Simon at Illini Media remember not only his talent as a journalist, but also his humor, generosity and the lasting friendships he formed.
“Roger Simon was one of the top-of-the-top Illini Media Hall of Famers,” said Jim Schlueter, president of the Illini Media Company Board of Directors and former executive sports reporter for The Daily Illini. “As we mourn his passing, we remember Roger for the stories he told, the journalists he inspired, the friendships he formed, and the lasting mark he left on the newsroom where his remarkable career first began.”
We’re honored to remember an Illini Media alumnus whose career began in our newsroom and whose work went on to make a lasting impact on journalism. 🧡💙
