Regrammed from Nancy Barile: “Going through my stuff to try and declutter and came across one of my favorite pieces. The story: Nick Marden played bass in the groundbreaking punk band, The Stimulators. You may recall Harley Flanagan was the drummer for the Stimulators when he was like 12 years old. A photograph of Nick’s “Loud Fast Rules!” leather jacket, taken by Robert Mapplethorpe, hangs in the Tate Museum. Nick is also the son of world renowned, contemporary artist Brice Marden. Nevertheless. Nick is an artist in his own right, and in the early ‘80s, he hand-painted punk and hardcore badges and pins. Jimmy G. gave me this one, and the quote is from the night SS Decontrol played with Minor Threat and MDC at Irving Plaza in November 1982, and Choke and the Boston crew took over the stage before SSD’s set. I’ll let Choke tell it: “I decided to write this drill sergeant–style chant about straight edge, and recite it before SSD played with Minor Threat at Irving Plaza. Again, I was just trolling, but people fell for it hook, line, and sinker. It had lines in it like “*** anyone with a beer in their hand.” I mean, c’mon, really? We were having fun with it all.”

As someone who was there that night, I can tell you it was funny AF, and anyone who was also there knew it. I was always surprised when I heard the mythology that grew from it. Over the years, I’ve gotten rid of a lot punk ephemera, but I will never part with this little artifact. (I blurred out part to avoid the FB/IG censors.).”
