“When the owners of this home traded Virginia for Arizona, they were ready to embrace more than a change in scenery. They wanted their new home to reflect the warmth and ease of desert living, with an aesthetic that felt organic, inviting, and suited to the way they envisioned entertaining in their new surroundings.

The home had been remodeled prior to their purchase, but the existing design didn’t fully reflect their style. Rather than starting over, Whyte House Design (WhyteHouse.co) took a more thoughtful approach, identifying which existing elements were worth keeping and where strategic changes could have the greatest impact.

At the center of that transformation is a custom arched bar designed to bring both architectural interest and function to the adjoining dining space.“

“For several years, the design conversation revolved around bright white kitchens and cool gray tones. Around Phoenix, that mood is changing. People are now asking for rooms that read warmer and richer, with more variation, more depth, more “you notice it when you walk in.” The stark white, gray, and black farmhouse look is giving way to layered, cozy interiors that feel curated instead of copied.

When it comes to kitchen and bath design, a major shift shows up in the woodwork. Natural cabinetry is back, and so are furniture-style vanities that feel more like a piece you’d find at a vintage market than a box you’d install. White oak with warm undertones, walnut, and medium stains bring character immediately, and they sit especially well with Arizona’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle.“

“As Jody van Rijn, Founder of Rural Stems Flower Farm, likes to say, what started out as “a few flowers in a livestock water trough and a vacated donkey field” has now turned into her dream come true.

For as long as she can remember, Van Rijn has loved flowers and how beautiful blossoms can help evoke memories and feelings.

“I grew up on a dairy farm and married a Dutch dairyman, so agriculture runs deep in our families,” Van Rijn says, adding that after visiting the Netherlands many times and marveling at the beauty of the flowers growing there, she decided to try growing flowers in the desert.”
