The crowd goes wild as the buzzer sounds and the scoreboard lights up with the score 19-6, a win against Centreville High School on May 8. Beyond the wins, players cite the team’s developments and progress as keys to success.

Offense has been the focal point of improvement according to captain senior Haden Robertson. The new freshmen players entering the team brought new energy like Eli Miller, the second leading goal scorer.

Twenty years after the original movie, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” returns to the world of Runway magazine with the same glamorous fashion and iconic characters, but this time the story transforms to connect a lot more to the modern world than the original film.

Directed by David Frankel, the sequel follows Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, as she struggles to keep Runway relevant, while print journalism slowly dies and social media takes over everything. Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway), a journalist and Miranda’s former assistant, unexpectedly returns to the magazine after losing her job at The New York Vanguard and Emily Charlton (played by Emily Blunt), Runway’s former assistant, has gone from stressed assistant to powerful fashion executive.

Senior center fielder Nick Zingerelli kneels on the on-deck circle as he prepares for his turn in the cage. On the field, his teammates drill relay throws in the outfield during a practice. To players, individual improvements are a part of a team’s performance.

“I’ve really been working on just being a locked-down outfielder,” Zingerelli said. “When it comes to hitting, just doing my job is my biggest focus.

With thrill rides, a ferris wheel and cotton candy, the Fair Oaks Mall Carnival attracts many families and residents in the area for an afternoon of entertainment and amusement.

Open from May 13-25, the carnival holds over 20 rides with various age and height qualifications. Entry to the fair itself costs $5, but all rides require anywhere from three to eight credits, which can be bought for $1 per credit at a kiosk near the entrance.

Additionally, attendees can purchase a wristband for $42.50 for access to unlimited rides, given that height requirements are met; however, a handful of the family rides only accept credits.

The carnival opens at 6 p.m. on weekdays, while on weekends it opens at 3 p.m. Closing time varies depending on capacity and weather, but generally is around 10 p.m. or later. After sunset, the grounds can become more crowded and lines for popular rides such as “Air Raid,” “Freak Out” or the ferris wheel get longer.

Rides vary in intensity from high thrillers that carry passengers meters high in the air like “Zero Gravity” to leisurely, scenic activities like the “Grand Carousel” or “Jumbo Circus,” providing several options for any age or preference. Food stalls are also available throughout the fairground, offering classic carnival treats like funnel cakes, corn dogs, caramel apples and fresh-squeezed lemonade.

“I really enjoyed the diversity of the rides,” senior Zach Schwartz said. “It was a great spot for me and my friends to hang out, so I would definitely recommend it to people.”

Students are rushing into school, but they are not the only ones—teachers are also entering the building, dedicating hours both in and out of the classroom preparing instructional materials, grading assignments and helping students understand new concepts.

Students can show gratitude for their teachers’ dedication during Teacher Appreciation Week, which runs from May 4-8. National Teacher Day also falls during this week, celebrated on May 5. The inspiration for this holiday originated in 1944 when Arkansas school teacher Mattye White Woodbridge wrote to politicians and educational professionals about the demand for a day to appreciate teachers. It was almost a decade before this idea was able to reach Congress with the support of Eleanor Roosevelt and was adopted in 1953.

Freshman Mia Tizol catches the ball before the opposing team reaches third base in a game against Centerville High School on April 24, with Chantilly winning 4-0.The varsity softball team began their spring season with new freshman players arriving to the team.

According to Max Preps, the team has five freshmen players this year. This is their first season of high school softball; but, for many, it’s not the first time playing the game. For example, Tizol began playing softball at 8 years old, similar to other freshman players that made the team. Tizol said her background in the sport added to her experience and skills she brought to the team, while also allowing her to be knowledgeable of the skills necessary for the game, giving her an advantage for the tryouts.

Past 9 p.m., a group of people wipe the windows, take out the trash and clean the floors in a building without any teachers or students. They are the custodians — and Head Custodian and Building Manager Tuan Vo manages them all.

“He’s very kind,” custodian Jessica Franco said. “He tries to help other people. When someone has an issue, he listens to both sides. I see that other bosses only send people to work, but he also helps us with our jobs.”

The Wellness Fair occurs twice a year during homeroom to give students an opportunity to engage in a diverse assortment of activities at school. The spring date for the event was Friday, April 24.

On Thursday, the day before the Wellness Fair, the activity schedule was posted on Schoology. Options include AP exam review, study hall, sports, arts and crafts and board games, giving students a variety of choices that appeal to them.

“I appreciate that the Wellness Fair gives teachers and students the choice to participate in fun or relaxing activities,” English substitute teacher Saniya Lee said. “The high school environment can feel very ‘go, go, go’ all the time, so in my opinion, having a period of time to pause and do something for ourselves once in a while is absolutely necessary.”

This event was split into two blocks where students may switch to a different activity halfway through, but are not allowed to roam the hallways throughout the period and can only enter and exit the building through specific doors, such as Door 10 for the field or tennis courts and Door 9 for the mods.

However, the Wellness Fair was cut short at approximately 10:45 a.m. when a gas-like odor was detected inside the main building, causing an evacuation out of an abundance of caution, according to an email sent to families by assistant principal Michelle Case.

The Fairfax County Fire Department arrived and inspected the building and the roof, determining that the building was safe around 30 minutes later. All students and faculty reentered the building and transitioned to fifth period, concluding the last Wellness Fair of the school year.
