One year ago today, Hurricane María began its destruction in the Atlantic and hit Puerto Rico just a few days later, worsening the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma just a couple weeks prior.

We would like to honor the thousands of lives lost due to these catastrophic storms and all of the survivors whose lives and communities have been forever changed.

Last night, our team was honored to take home The David Teeuwen Student Journalism Award for a Large Newsroom at the Online News Association Awards in Austin, Texas. We are excited to continue expanding the audience of our work and the people and stories they represent.

We are incredibly thankful to have the chance to continue sharing these important stories of loss and recovery, of pain and perseverance. We are so appreciative of all of the amazing Puerto Ricans who opened up their hearts to our team of student journalists.

These stories would not have gained the traction they have without our friends at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus, our engaged and supportive social media followers, the UNC School of Media and Journalism, the HuffPost and so many others.
