Chicago soul at its finest: Barbara Acklin took this timeless anthem straight to the top of the charts in ‘68, and it still hits just as hard today.

Back in 1965, Gene Chandler proved he was way more than just “The Duke of Earl” with the release of the absolute powerhouse track, “Nothing Can Stop Me.”

Written by the legendary Curtis Mayfield, this song didn’t just make waves—it dominated. It smashed its way up the charts, peaking at an incredible #3 on the Billboard R&B chart and cracking the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

But its success didn’t stop in the 60s. The track’s driving beat and Chandler’s soaring vocals turned it into an instant dancefloor filler, eventually becoming one of the most iconic, enduring anthems of the global Northern Soul movement.

Over 60 years later, that infectious groove is still completely unstoppable.

Tyrone Davis’s “Turn Back the Hands of Time” climbed to #1 on the R&B chart and #3 on the Pop chart in 1970. a crossover most artists chase their whole careers and never catch.

But the artwork deserves its own credit. Loring Eutemey’s design, shot by Joel Brodsky (the same eye behind some of the era’s most enduring rock and soul portraits), built a clock motif into the cover that mirrored the song’s plea note for note. The visual didn’t decorate the title — it argued for it.

That’s the kind of art direction that ages into a masterclass.

65 years. 27 #1 hits. One address.

In 1966, Nat Tarnopol and Carl Davis set up shop at 1449 South Michigan Ave in Chicago and over the next decade, Brunswick Records and its Dakar imprint turned that building into a hit factory. The Chi-Lites. Tyrone Davis. Jackie Wilson. Gene Chandler. Barbara Acklin. Young-Holt Unlimited. 27 top 10 Billboard R&B hits between 1966 and 1976, all born within those walls.

On June 18, 2025, the State of Illinois made it official with a proclamation honoring Brunswick Records, the Chi-Lites, and everyone, artists, producers, musicians, engineers, who helped build that legacy. Some of them showed up in person to celebrate.

Born December 23, 1940 - celebrating the legacy of Eugene Booker Record.

Born in Chicago, he not only fronted Chicago’s The Chi-Lites, but his work helped shape the Brunswick sound.🎙️

Although he left us on July 22, 2005, his voice lives on:
