How Strange It Is To Be Anything At All Live music photography etc from photographer-blographer-once DJ/zinster-always scenester John Guerin

This is the Facebook mirror of How Strange It Is To Be Anything At All. While basically a music blog, I’ll also try to write about other subjects that interest me – autism, NOLA, science, etc. – as I have on occasion in the past. How Strange... concentrates on the vibrant scene here in the Triangle of NC (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill-Carrboro). After seeing probably thousands of live shows, f

rom Public Enemy to the Pixies (OG, not pay-for-the-kids'-college reunions), I’m somewhat amazed that I still LOVE live music, and STILL discover music that sounds “new” to me. - John Guerin

I can't believe I got to see the Beatles at the Cavern!! (The Cave in Chapel Hill 😁)

This was from local all-Beatles act One After 919's show just after Christmas. I also captured "Sgt. Peppers/Help from My Friends" and 'Don't Let Me Down", to be posted later on YouTube, along with photos on my ig. They played 35 (THIRTY FIVE) songs, in chronological order. Amazing set; see them if you like the Beatles... or even if you just like live music! I heard they had another set coming up, but I can't remember where or when at the moment.

One After 919 is a local play on the Beatles' song "One After 909", the local area code here in the Triangle of NC being 919. They're not a "tribute" band in...

Vid of Hndclw from back in June at Cannonball Music Hall in Raleigh

A rare slow tune from one of the great OBX bands, at the new Cannonball Music Hall back in June. They hadn't played in a couple of years, and that was too long.

Another River Shook video from Manifest back in March

Posting a long overdue song from River Shook's duo set at Manifest a few weeks ago. They said this was a new tune.. maybe a record to come?

Beautiful song, one of my favorites, from Dunums' latest album.

Great duo set from River Shook & Blake Tallent (formerly of Sarah Shook & The Disarmers) last weekend at Manifest.

It was a pleasure to catch an artist as talented as River Shook in the confines of the Cave (here as a duo with partner Blake Tallent), rather then the large...

Great band from RVA, Outer World, from back in November. This video and my pics of the band were lost in the shuffle of a very busy November. I HIGHLY recommend checking them out next time they pass through, as well as their latest album, "Who Does the Music Love?"

This video of outer World performing at Rubies in November (and photos of same) got lost in the shuffle of me traveling soon thereafter, but better late than...

I briefly met Sijal Nasralla of Durham's Dunums at a show some months ago. When I said I hadn’t seen his band yet, he said “You’ve NEVER heard of Dunums?!” (I had heard OF them but hadn’t HEARD them) What might have sounded braggadocious instead came off as utterly sincere, with the confidence of one who simply believed in their art. So I made a mental note to keep an ear out.

A couple of weeks later, I heard a song on the radio that hit me in a way that doesn’t happen often. A way that makes me think “Who IS this?!?” Pouring forth from the speakers was a unique, fun, joyous sound, but with the air of a boisterous bunch of friends singing. I found out it was Dunums, live no less, on WXYC’s Backyard BBQ. That’s when I REALLY made it a point to see them next chance I got.

In the meantime, I started listening to their new album, which did NOT disappoint. “I Wasn’t That Thought” is full of joy and sadness, sweetness and darkness, unexpected twists and anthemic bursts…and sounds every bit like the collective bunch of kindred spirits they profess to be. It’s 12 tracks of raucous, beautiful, childlike defiance in the face of an often cruel world.

Their record release show is at The Pinhook Thursday. So yeah, I’m finally gonna see them play. And you should, too. With Tre. Charles and Meltdownrodeo ... EARLY show, 7:00, don't sleep on it!
