I briefly met Sijal Nasralla of Durham's Dunums at a show some months ago. When I said I hadn’t seen his band yet, he said “You’ve NEVER heard of Dunums?!” (I had heard OF them but hadn’t HEARD them) What might have sounded braggadocious instead came off as utterly sincere, with the confidence of one who simply believed in their art. So I made a mental note to keep an ear out.
A couple of weeks later, I heard a song on the radio that hit me in a way that doesn’t happen often. A way that makes me think “Who IS this?!?” Pouring forth from the speakers was a unique, fun, joyous sound, but with the air of a boisterous bunch of friends singing. I found out it was Dunums, live no less, on WXYC’s Backyard BBQ. That’s when I REALLY made it a point to see them next chance I got.
In the meantime, I started listening to their new album, which did NOT disappoint. “I Wasn’t That Thought” is full of joy and sadness, sweetness and darkness, unexpected twists and anthemic bursts…and sounds every bit like the collective bunch of kindred spirits they profess to be. It’s 12 tracks of raucous, beautiful, childlike defiance in the face of an often cruel world.
Their record release show is at The Pinhook Thursday. So yeah, I’m finally gonna see them play. And you should, too. With Tre. Charles and Meltdownrodeo ... EARLY show, 7:00, don't sleep on it!
