Photographer Tom Franklin revisited Ground Zero and retraced his steps for his famous 9/11 firefighter photo.

"Three firefighters stand atop a pile of twisted steel and debris, raising an American flag above the ruins of the World Trade Center. Smoke drifts through the background.

The towers are in rubble behind them. The landscape is gray, scarred and unrecognizable. Bathed in the glow of the late-afternoon light, the firefighters look skyward, squinting into the sun. Their faces are solemn.

I made that photograph on the afternoon of Sept. 11, 2001, about six hours after the collapse of the Twin Towers.

The exposure lasted just 1/640th of a second.
Yet for 25 years, the image has lived on in the hearts and minds of millions and has become part of the visual history of one of the darkest days in American history," Franklin wrote in his piece for The Asbury Park Press, part of the USA TODAY Network.

She was the first officer to call in the attack on the World Trade Center. She rushed in to help — and never came home. Moira Smith was the only female NYPD officer to die on 9/11. Twenty-five years later, her memory lives on. WOW! Y’all did this. I saw Sharing God's Love Crisis Ministry Irmo SC call for help and by partnering up Irmo Elementary School PTA and Irmo Middle School PTSO putting the flyers out and collecting - this is what we were able to collect for them! Because of y’all - there will be people in our community who will benefit greatly. Thank you to each person who helped make this happen!

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation experienced a tragedy we will never forget.

On September 11, 2001, 2,977 innocent lives were lost, including 23 NYPD officers, 37 Port Authority Police Department officers and 343 FDNY firefighters who answered the call when their communities needed them most.

Today, the men and women of the Irmo Police Department pause to remember every life lost, every family forever changed and every first responder who ran toward danger to help others.

Their courage reminds us what it means to serve.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
