Moe Bandy Celebrates 50th Anniversary Of Hit Single "Bandy The Rodeo Clown"

Bandy’s New Album ‘Songs I Missed’ Is Available Now!
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – CMA and ACM award-winning country music legend Moe Bandy celebrates the 50th anniversary of his hit single “Bandy The Rodeo Clown.” Written by legendary songwriters Wh**ey Shafer and Country Music Hall of Famer Lefty Frizzell, the song is the title track and was the second of three singles released for the album “Bandy the Rodeo Clown.” The song reached # 7 on Billboard’s Country Chart and climbed to #4 on the Canadian Country Tracks chart.

"Bandy The Rodeo Clown" is still one of my most requested songs everywhere I play," shares Bandy. "It's always been funny how people think I was a true rodeo clown when I wasn't. I was a bull rider for several years on the weekends, but was never a rodeo clown. It was such an honor to get a call from Lefty Frizzell and Wh**ey Shaffer letting me know they had written this song for me to record. It was an honor then and will always be one of the biggest thrills of my life."

Bandy’s highly anticipated new album ‘Songs I Missed’ is available now in partnership with StarVista Music. Staying true to his traditional country roots, Bandy delivers a heartfelt collection of classic hits—some he once passed on, others he wished he'd had the chance to record. The album features iconic songs like “Heartaches By The Number,” “Six Days On The Road,” “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” “Amarillo By Morning,” “Pure Love,” and more. With his signature honky-tonk sound and soulful vocals, Bandy pays tribute to country music’s golden era while adding his own timeless style. Tracks from the album have been featured by Cowboys & Indians, Country Evolution, RFD-TV, The Tennessee Star, and more.

In the mid-seventies, when the country pop sounds of Kenny Rogers, John Denver, and the outlaw styles of Waylon and Willie were all the rage, traditionalist Moe Bandy came along. Third Coast Talent represented Johnny Rodriguez for almost 30 years. There will never be another Johnny Rodriguez. Our love and prayers go out to his family, friends and millions of fans.

Johnny Rodriguez, Pioneering Hispanic Country Music Star, Dies at 73.

His daughter, Aubry Rodriguez, confirmed her father’s passing in a heartfelt social media post on Friday (May 9).

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Johnny Rodriguez, who left us peacefully on May 9th, surrounded by family,” Aubry wrote on Instagram. “Dad was not only a legendary musician whose artistry touched millions around the world, but also a deeply loved husband, father, uncle, and brother whose warmth, humor, and compassion shaped the lives of all who knew him. We are immensely grateful for the outpouring of love and support from fans, colleagues, and friends during this time of grief.”

Aubry concluded her tribute by calling her father an “irreplaceable” and an “extraordinary talent,” and requested privacy for the family as they “navigate this painful moment together.”

George Strait paid tribute to his fellow Texas on social media: “Norma and I are so sad about Johnny’s passing. He was an inspiration to me from the beginning. Being from South Texas myself, it gave me so much hope knowing that he had become such a huge success…that maybe there was hope for a guy like me. What a great talent he was. God bless his family, friends and fans. You’ll be missed, amigo.”

Born Juan Rodriguez in Sabinal, Texas, in 1951, Rodriguez was discovered at 18 by music promoter Happy Shahan after he was heard singing in a jail cell, where he was briefly held for a minor offense, according to a Ken Burns biography on PBS.org.

Rodriguez’s musical influences ranged from mariachi to honky-tonk, shaped by his South Texas upbringing. “I was drawn to country music because I could relate more to what they were singing about,” he told Burns. “And also it was just like the music of our people. In Mexican music, you have stories. Mexican music and country music said almost the same thing, just in different languages,” he said.

Initially performing under the name Johnny Rogers, Rodriguez played at Alamo Village and soon caught the attention of country stars Bobby Bare and Tom T. Hall. At 21, he moved to Nashville, changed his last name back to Rodriguez, joined Hall’s band as a guitarist, and later signed with Mercury Records.

His debut album, Introducing Johnny Rodriguez, reached No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Country Albums chart in May 1973 and was nominated for album of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards. He had six No. 1 hits on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart: “You Always Come Back (To Hurting Me),” “Ridin’ My Thumb to Mexico,” “That’s the Way Love Goes,” “I Just Can’t Get Her Out Out of My Mind,” “Just Get Up and Close the Door” and “Love Put a Song in My Heart.”

Rodriguez won an ACM Award for most promising male vocalist in 1973 and was nominated for single of the year for his breakthrough hit, “Pass Me By (If You’re Only Passing Through). The following year, he was nominated for top male vocalist and entertainer of the year (in addition to album of the year).

At the CMA Awards, Rodriguez was nominated for male vocalist of the year in 1973 and album of the year in 1994 as one of many artists on Asleep at the Wheel’s Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

In 2007, he was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.

Rodriguez is survived by his daughter, Aubry, whom he shared with his second wife, Debbie McNeely.

COUNTRY LEGEND AND GRAND OLE OPRY MEMBER
JEANNIE SEELY RELEASES HEALTH UPDATE

Nashville, Tenn. (May 7, 2025) — Country music legend and Grand Ole Opry member Jeannie Seely today updated her fans and the music industry on the status of her health following multiple surgeries over the past few weeks.

"Over the past several weeks, I've received so many wonderful messages of love and concern about being missed on the Grand Ole Opry and on 'Sundays with Seely' on Willie's Roadhouse," Seely explains. "Thank you for those, and I assure you that I miss you just as much! Hopefully I can count on that support as I struggle through this recovery process from multiple back surgeries in March, as well as two emergency abdominal surgeries in April, followed by eleven days in the intensive care unit and a bout with pneumonia. Rehab is pretty tough but each day is looking brighter and last night, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel. And it was neon, so I knew it was mine! The unsinkable Seely is working her way back."

Once fully recovered, Seely plans to continue performing regularly on the Opry stage, recording her weekly show — Sundays with Seely — on SiriusXM’s Willie’s Roadhouse and releasing new music.

About Jeannie Seely
Early in Jeannie Seely’s career, music industry professionals praised her soul-inspired vocals, which resulted in her being named “Miss Country Soul” – a title still used today. In 2019, Seely was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts from Lincoln Memorial University for her many groundbreaking accomplishments in the music industry. Born and raised in northwestern Pennsylvania, Seely received the “Most Promising Female Artist” award in 1964 from the Country and Western Academy (later becoming the Academy of Country Music). A year later, Seely moved to Nashville, where she signed with Monument Records, and her chart-topping hit “Don’t Touch Me” resulted in her becoming only the third female country artist to receive a Grammy Award. After receiving the “Most Promising New Artist” awards from Cashbox, Record World, and Billboard, Seely appeared on Billboard’s country singles chart for 13 consecutive years. On September 16, 1967, she was inducted as a world-famous Grand Ole Opry member. She was the first Pennsylvania native to become an Opry member and later became the first female to regularly host Opry segments. Widely recognized for changing the image of female country performers, she became the first person to wear a mini-skirt on the Opry stage. Seely formed one of the most successful duets and road shows in country music history with fellow Opry member Jack Greene. In 2022, the Grand Ole Opry honored her for the most performances in the Opry’s history, a record that will almost certainly remain intact forever. A BMI-awarded songwriter, Seely's songs have been recorded by Country Music Hall of Fame members, including Dottie West, Merle Haggard, Connie Smith, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Faron Young, Ernest Tubb, Little Jimmy Dickens, and Hank Williams Jr. – as well as by artists ranging from Irma Thomas (the “Soul Queen of New Orleans”) to Rhonda Vincent (the “Queen of Bluegrass”), from Chris LeDoux to Moe Bandy, and from Boys II Men to Seal. The star of significant stage productions including Always, Patsy Cline, The Best Little Wh******se In Texas, and several others, Seely has served as a radio disc jockey on her own Armed Forces Network, traveled on military tours throughout Europe and Asia, and published her book titled Pieces Of A Puzzled Mind. Recordings by Seely have spanned seven decades, from her Top 10 Billboard album The Seely Style to her Curb Records album An American Classic, which includes her third duet with friend Willie Nelson. She appeared in Willie’s movie Honeysuckle Rose and sang on the platinum soundtrack album. In 2018, she began hosting her weekly show, “Sundays with Seely,” on the Willie’s Roadhouse channel of SiriusXM. In 2018, she was inducted into the Music City Walk of Fame, representing all music genres. At the inaugural Influencing Women Awards Gala in 2019, the first “Standing Ovation Award” was presented to Seely, and her name was added to the annual award. In 2022 , she was recognized on the nationally televised Country Music Association (CMA) Awards Show, in 2023 she received the CMA’s prestigious Joe Talbot Award, and in 2024 she was honored by SOURCE with the esteemed Jo Walker-Meador Lifetime Achievement Award. Following Seely's 5,381st performance on the Grand Ole Opry in September 2024, the “Jeannie Seely Interchange” was dedicated at the Briley Parkway exit to the Grand Ole Opry House.

About Moe Bandy:
Moe Bandy’s country music accomplishments include ten No. 1 hit songs, many Top Ten hits, five Gold records, and numerous ACM and CMA Awards. He started his recording career while he was a sheet metal worker in San Antonio, Texas, but after a decade of hard labor, Bandy traded his sheet metal for Gold albums. In the mid-seventies, when the country pop sounds of Kenny Rogers, John Denver, and the outlaw styles of Waylon and Willie were all the rage, traditionalist Moe Bandy came along. Bandy recently penned an autobiography, ‘Moe Bandy: Lucky Me,’ which is now available at moebandybook.com.

Home- Moe Bandy is one of America’s all-time leading classic country music Artist/Performer. Moe’s long string of hits include “Bandy The Rodeo Clown”
