“I’m gonna step outside for smoke” I blurted into the dark to my AB. “You don’t have any smokes,” he fired back as we both smirked back at each other in the empty blackness of the bridge.

A couple minutes past 2am, we’d expected snow some 6 hours prior but the weather forecast was lacking as per usual. Beams of moonlight had just peaked through some clouds as I stepped out the bridge wing for some fresh air, “slosh, slosh, slosh.” I heard as I took my first 3 steps outside.

About 3 inches of snow, covered the deck, hand rails, and containers and the clouds opened up just enough to see all of it. (Snap, snap, snap)

We’d been rolling pretty good the past couple days on the edge of a typhoon heading toward Shanghai. Cranky, tired, and over staring at the waves for this contract, I stepped outside for a polar plunge into the 30F atmosphere to wake myself up but ended up smelling the roses instead. It was my first time seeing snow at sea and I couldn’t believe it… I was freezing my 🍑 off, but I liked it. This smoke break really was a breath of fresh air.
