It's my opinion that what "Big Pat" did here, is in extremely poor taste. He's a sitting city council person, and he's actively helping the opponent of incumbent Beth Kerns - Ward 7, Charleston, WV campaign against her.
The City of Charleston, WV and specifically Ward 7, couldn't dream of a better advocate than Beth. Check out the endorsement from CFD Local 317. They know the amount of work and time Beth puts in.
Shame on Pat. As terrible as I think this is, I'm surprised, but not shocked. And let me tell you why.
When Pat was up for re-election, he reached out to The Squad and begged to come on our podcast because WV Can't Wait was running someone against him. He pleaded and cried about how awful it was for them to even think of challenging him. Literally, cried. His wife called me, cried and also begged me to let Pat come on the show. Looking back, I feel they both used me as free advertising. As far as I know, Pat doesn't really campaign. He doesn't knock on doors that I know of. He was so pi**ed that he was actually having to spend money on a campaign because he was being challenged.
At that time, I thought Pat and his wife were nice people. They had always been very kind to me, and spoke so highly of my children, always finding me at meetings and talking, hugging and catching up.
So, I had him on the podcast and let him tell his sob story.
Not long after that, the city of Charleston found out that then Chief of Police, Tyke Hunt, had indeed been lying about committing misconduct all along. Disgusting misconduct that The Squad and members of council, including Beth Kerns, knew had occurred and was demanding accountability for. Some were demanding accountability. Others were laughing it off. Literally blaming the women.
It was at that point that Big Pat took the side of a corrupt police chief, instead of fighting for the victims of said chief, as well as the taxpayers of Charleston. Women were used, a public office was disgraced and Pat Jones chose to protect his friend. Even after the facts came out and the truth was known.
During the time that Beth and others were demanding accountability, Pat turned into a big as***le (I suspect he always was). He moaned and cried and blamed the women. He was disrespectful and shouted down anyone who didn't stand up for the corrupt police chief and the Mayor.
But ultimately, the city had to save face and the chief was allowed to take medical retirement.
"If you want to see the true character of a man, disagree with him."
Being on city council means that people will disagree. A lot of the time. But being able to have civil debate and NOT have your judgment clouded by your loyalty to a friend over the well-being of the taxpayers, is something Big Pat simply can't do and he's proven it.
