Hiking the Samaria Gorge in Crete πŸ₯Ύ

We woke up at 6:00AM, loaded up our pack and drove to the parking lot of the Samaria Gorge for the start of our almost 10-mile hike (our Airbnb was only a 25-minute drive from the lot.)

From there, we began our walk as soon as the gates opened to the National Park (around 7:15AM that day.) It was 6 euros per person to enter (free for kids under 18.) Only one other family from France and a solo hiker were there right at opening (we did not see them again on the trail.)

The terrain was extremely rocky almost the entire time (hiking boots highly recommended to help avoid a broken ankle!) This was what made the hike difficult, not because of much elevation gain or incline (we were walking downwards or level most of the time.) The views were absolutely gorgeous the entire time.

There were plenty of rest areas along the way, with a few restrooms sprinkled throughout. We saw a couple of mules, some ruins of the ancient city of Samaria, and a handful of hikers who passed us during our 5+ hour journey through the canyon.

We stopped for lunch (homemade sandwiches, apples + chips) about 4 hours in, and we finished our journey in the small beach town of Agia Roumeli where we enjoyed a couple of cold beverages and more snacks at a beachfront cafe, followed by a dip in the Mediterranean to cool off.

The town is inaccessible by car, so we road the ferry over to the coastal town of Sougia - and from there we had to take an hour long bus ride back to the parking lot where our rental car was. It was quite the adventure!
