Despite a rainy summer, Eastern’s tunnel project remains mostly on track, with an upcoming closure of Ninth Street set to begin Monday to facilitate laying the next section of pipe toward the Renewable Energy Center.

Ninth Street between Roosevelt Avenue and Cleveland Avenue is scheduled to be closed until Oct. 4, according to a resolution passed Tuesday at the Charleston City Council Meeting.

Work on the tunnel project will slow during the winter as the temporary aboveground utility lines on campus would freeze during colder temperatures, said Vice President for Business Affairs Matt Bierman.

Information Technology Services, the Panthercard Office and the Telecommunications Office can now all be found on the fourth floor of Booth Library in the form of a single helpdesk.

All three services moved to the library following a year-long reevaluation of used space on Eastern Illinois University’s campus.

Executive Director of ITS Ryan Gibson and former Dean of Booth Library Brian Keith led the reevaluation project, which culminated in the release of a Facilities Reinvestment Plan Proposal in February 2025.

Temperatures in the mid 90s at game time was a sign of the temperature of the game ahead, as a physical battle led to a combined nine yellow cards handed out by referee John Kennedy in Eastern’s 2-1 loss to Northern Illinois Saturday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

While the heat took its toll with mandatory hydration breaks in effect, and multiple instances of play having to be stopped due to players suffering cramps, EIU head coach Ruy Vaz believes the heat played in their favor if it played any role whatsoever.

“I think if anything [the heat] helped us,” Vaz said. “We were able to keep the ball. We were able to play our game. I don’t think it played any factor.”

Pennsylvania State University’s assistant professor of piano visited Eastern Illinois University for a piano recital at Doudna Fine Arts Center on Thursday.

Katherine Benson said her coworker Ben Carrasquillo, Penn State’s assistant professor of trombone, previously worked at Eastern as a trombone and jazz studies instructor.

“He has been telling me a lot of wonderful things about EIU the whole time he’s been at Penn State, and we’ve played music by the composition faculty here at EIU,” Benson said. “It was really special for me to finally come.”

In spite of the distant journey, steamy travel, and early QB exit, Charleston High School football deliverd a resilient performance in their 42-28 loss to the Carterville Lions Friday night.

Entering their Friday night matchup with the Lions, the Trojans’ travel arrangements quickly proved to be a massive disadvantage. The roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive was only worsened by the bus’s A/C malfunction, leaving CHS players with no choice but to bask in the uncomfortable humidity en route to their road showdown in Carterville.

Couple this with a few roughing-the-passer penalties sidelining junior quarterback Brody Wilson early and the night had gotten off to a less-than-fortunate start for the visiting Trojans.

Charleston, despite the adverse conditions, was able to stick with a Carterville team ranked near the top 10 in class 4A throughout the night.

After the Walt Crawford Open on Friday got pushed back twice and almost canceled because of the heat, the race finally began at 6 p.m.

The men ran first when the sun was up more and still hotter.

Eastern Illinois sophomore Jiberil Lesman came out hot and ran with the front of the pack for most of the race. However, that pace didn’t last.
