“Being a cowboy is not in the color of your skin. It’s in your heart.”
Onyx Vision connects with Jesse Guillory, Director and General Manager of Black Rodeo USA, for a conversation about Black cowboy history, rodeo culture, mentorship and the importance of passing the Western way of life to the next generation.
Growing up around horses and cattle in Texas, Jesse lived the cowboy lifestyle as a child—but says he never saw Black cowboys or their history represented in what he learned at school.
Today, he travels the country with Black Rodeo USA , helping give audiences an opportunity to experience that history and giving young people a chance to see Black cowboys and cowgirls competing in the arena.
Jesse also takes us behind the scenes of what it takes to bring a traveling rodeo to cities across America and explains why his ultimate goal is bigger than rodeo: to leave a blueprint for the generations coming behind him.
