Not all movement is growth.

When transitioning, particularly from military service, it’s easy to stay busy—applications, networking, planning, exploring.

Activity creates the feeling of progress.

But activity alone doesn’t guarantee it.

You can move a lot—and still not move forward.

Because growth requires something different.

It requires intention.
Reflection.
Adjustment.

Movement fills time.
Growth changes direction.

The difference isn’t effort.
It’s focus.

When identity is anchored, decisions become clearer.

Not easier—but clearer.

Because you’re no longer deciding based on pressure, expectations, or perception.

You’re deciding from foundation.

Galatians 2:20 reminds us that our identity is not self-defined—it’s Christ-centered.

That changes everything.

How we lead.
How we decide.
How we respond when pressure builds.

When identity is secure, leadership becomes steady.

Not because circumstances are simple—
but because your foundation is.

Reflection:
Where are you being pulled away from your foundation?

Values don’t matter until they cost you something.

Time.
Opportunity.
Approval.

Aligned leaders don’t just state values.

They make decisions that reflect them—especially under pressure.

Because pressure reveals what’s real.

Values aren’t proven in statements.
They’re proven in decisions.

And those decisions aren’t always easy.

They require conviction.
They require courage.

But over time, those choices shape more than outcomes.

They shape credibility.

Misalignment rarely shows up all at once.

It shows up as:
• frustration
• fatigue
• friction

Often, those aren’t workload issues.

They’re alignment issues.

Your system is telling you something.

The question is whether you’re paying attention.

:
Where are you feeling friction that might actually be misalignment?

Values are easy to state.
They’re harder to sustain.

John Maxwell often teaches that leadership is influence—but influence is built on consistency.

And consistency reveals values.

Character isn’t proven in intention.
It’s revealed in discipline—the discipline to live out what we say matters.

Brene Brown discusses practical ways to operationalize our values by identifying behavioral indicators - almost like KPIs.

What are you measuring?

What you repeat is what you actually value.

Not what you say.
Not what you intend.

What you do—consistently.

What is one behavior that reflects your core values right now?

Transition changes a lot. Uniform…rank…MOS…

Roles change.
Pace changes.
Expectations change.

But not everything does.

Values don’t.

One of the most stabilizing realizations in transitioning from the military is this:

What matters most doesn’t change—only where you apply it does.

When leaders stay anchored in values, transition becomes less disorienting.

Without that anchor, everything feels uncertain.

:
What value has stayed constant for you through transition?

A new month often brings new goals, new focus, new energy.

But the foundation doesn’t change.

Growth still comes from:
• faithfulness
• discipline
• dependence on God

Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us that His mercies are new every morning.

Not just once a year.
Not just in big moments.

Daily.

The opportunity in a new month isn’t to become someone different overnight.

It’s to continue becoming who you’re called to be—one step at a time.

God doesn’t require perfection.
He calls for faithfulness.

Reflection:
What would it look like to approach this next month with faithfulness instead of pressure?

Legacy isn’t built in big moments.

It’s built daily.

April wasn’t defined by one decision, one conversation, or one effort.

It was shaped by patterns:
• how you showed up
• what you prioritized
• what you reinforced consistently

Alignment isn’t something you talk about.

It’s something you build—one decision at a time.

And over time, those decisions compound.

What you repeat becomes what you build.

Before moving into May, it’s worth asking:
Did your actions reflect what you said mattered?

:
What did you reinforce this month—intentionally or unintentionally?

Unclear communication creates unnecessary friction.

Most teams don’t struggle because people aren’t capable.

They struggle because expectations aren’t clear.

Leaders often assume clarity:
• “They know what I mean”
• “We’ve talked about this before”

But assumption is not alignment.

Clarity requires repetition.
Clarity requires simplicity.
Clarity requires confirmation.

If it’s not clear, it’s not done.

Clear leaders reduce confusion.
Confusion slows everything.

:
Where do you need to communicate more clearly right now?

Growth doesn’t happen by accident.

Time passes. Experience accumulates.
But growth only happens when it’s intentional.

John Maxwell’s Law of Intentionality is simple—and demanding:

You must choose to grow.

For many leaders, especially in high-demand roles, growth gets pushed aside. Responsibility increases. Time compresses.

Growth becomes something we assume will happen along the way.

But without intention, experience becomes repetition.

You can go through a year…
or you can grow through it.

The difference is not time.
It’s intention.

:
Where do you need to be more intentional about your growth as you head into May?

Roles change.

Titles shift.
Responsibilities evolve.

Identity gets tested.

One of the most challenging parts of military transition is separating who you are from what you did.
In service—especially in uniform—role and identity often become tightly connected. When that role changes, it can feel like something important was lost.

But it wasn’t.

Your role changed. Your identity didn’t.

Your values, your leadership, your experience—they remain.

The work in transition is not rebuilding identity.
It’s re-grounding it.

And from that foundation, everything else becomes clearer.

:
How has your identity been challenged—or strengthened—during transition?
