1” air gap, rock to cement board with mesh, open at top, openings between rock at bottom. A hearth that is raised at least 6” or more makes loading stove and cleaning nice.

Thinking about burning some coal in my 1891 Magee Mistic I have recently restored. All the info I have for this stove says it’s a wood/coal burner, but I’ve never fooled with coal before. Any suggestions on best prices, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve made ammends to the routing of the stove pipe and position of the stove. It goes straight up and there’s 30” of horizontal pipe that slopes slightly upwards and right into the masonary chimney. There seemed to have been confusion for one individual thinking it went through my foundation and into the ground. The house is a rambler ranch on a steep slope. It goes through one layer of cinder block sleeved with terracotta into the chimney. I’ll attach a photo in the comments. My next orders of business are to replace the galvi pipe with single or double walled black stove pipe on 45°s instead of the 90° and have a professional chimney sweep check everything out. I’ve come to understand that the stove is a Harman shaker coal stove. It eats through wood considering the coals are being fed from underneath the grates. I have no intentions of burning coal in the near future. Would it be a bad thing to take the grates out and burn the wood on the bottom of the stove so the fuel pieces are fed from the intake and not the coals? The stove is 1/4” steel. I live 30 minutes from Halifax where these stoves are made so it’s a feel good to have it here. I’d rather not replace it with a solely wood burning stove.
