At Rail Explorers USA in Clay, West Virginia, accessibility is part of the adventure. Their electric-assisted rail bikes include adaptive harnesses for adults with disabilities, making it possible for more visitors to experience miles of scenic railroad, forests, waterfalls, and river views.

As Elk River Division Manager Trey Corwell puts it: "We want anyone to ride, no matter their age, size, or ability."

There are some views that make you feel very, very small.✨🌌

From a remote high k**b on North Fork Mountain, photographer Bob Stough captured the Milky Way stretching above West Virginia’s Powdermill Valley during a brief window between astronomical twilight and the rising moon.

He calls the image “A Starry Night’s Dream.” And his goal with every night photograph is simple: to make you feel like you’re standing there beside him in the darkness, looking up...

For Pamela Dunlap, fly fishing was never really about the fish. 🎣🌿

She discovered the sport just before turning 50 and found something unexpected in the water: confidence, patience, peace—and eventually, an entire community.

What started as inviting a few women along to fish became Women Wine & Waders, now celebrating 10 years of bringing women together for weekends filled with fly fishing, adventure, and friendships that extend far beyond the riverbank.

And the ripple kept growing. Dunlap later co-founded International Women’s Fly Fishing Day, now celebrated by thousands of women in 25 countries. 🌎

West Virginia’s red spruce is making a COMEBACK! 🌲

Once covering more than 1 million acres across the Mountain State, red spruce forests were reduced to scattered pockets after widespread logging and wildfires. Today, an estimated 30,000 acres remain—but an ambitious restoration effort is working to change that.

From collecting cones and growing locally sourced seedlings to opening forest canopies and using climate science to determine where trees have the best chance of thriving, conservationists across the region are helping red spruce reclaim West Virginia’s high country. And the comeback is already underway. 🌱
