IT’S VINALLY FRIDAY!! — Brought to you by Monster Music & Movies, your source for new & used vinyl records, CDs & DVDs.
This afternoon, we’re listening to “Dragon Attack” from Queen’s eighth studio album, The Game, released on June 30, 1980.
Written by guitarist Brian May, “Dragon Attack” grew out of a studio jam session inspired by the band’s time at a Munich club. The track blends hard rock with a funky, dance-able groove driven by bassist John Deacon and May’s unmistakable guitar work, making it a standout on the album.
The recording of The Game marked a major creative shift for Queen, including the legendary creation of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” Freddie Mercury famously wrote the song in about ten minutes while taking a bubble bath at Munich’s Bayerischer Hof Hotel and rushed it straight to the studio.
The album also marked the first time Mercury played acoustic rhythm guitar and the end of Queen’s “No Synthesizers” rule, with an Oberheim OB-X appearing on “Play the Game” and “Save Me.”
From “Dragon Attack” and “Another One Bites the Dust,” to “crazy Little Thing Called Love” The Game captures Queen at a fearless, playful, and powerful turning point.
Fun fact: “Another One Bites the Dust” wasn’t planned as a single until Michael Jackson encouraged the band to release it—correctly predicting it would become Queen’s best-selling song.
