Union Academy’s Kailiyah Holland is The Observer’s high school athlete of the week.

The Cardinals’ freshman won the 100 breaststroke (1:17.28) and the 200 individual medley (2:22.14) at Wingate University on Dec. 18.

Holland also helped the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams to victory at the same meet.

Holland’s efforts helped the Union Academy girls swim team to a first-place finish the same day.

Central Academy’s Michael Hoff is The Observer’s boys’ basketball player of the week.

The 5-9 senior point guard scored 11 points, had six rebounds and five assists in a 61-40 win over the N.C. Math and Science Academy in the Union Academy Christmas tournament on Dec. 22.

The next day, Hoff scored 24 points to go with six rebounds in a 48-44 loss to Buford in the same tournament.

Myers Park’s Amani Barner is The Observer’s girls’ basketball player of the week.

The 5-foot-10 junior scored 15 points, had 14 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in a 52-39 win over Hunter Huss in the opening round of the Ardrey Kell Winter Classic on Dec. 27.

Barner, the reigning SoMeck 4A conference player of the year, helped Myers Park improve to 7-4 overall this season.
