The North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced winners of its statewide awards for the 2025-26 school year Wednesday and North Mecklenburg's Jennifer Baker won one of the statewide honors.

Baker was named female coach of the year after leading the Vikings to the 2026 7A Women's Basketball State Championship. It was North Meck's first state championship in 40 years and the second in school history.

Baker, the program's all-time winningest coach with 326 victories, guided the Vikings to a 29-2 record while also serving as the school's interim athletic director.

Christ The King's Addison Pierce is The Observer's high school athlete of the week.

Pierce was named MVP of her team’s 3-0 win over Franklin Academy in the NCHSAA 2A girls' soccer state finals. Pierce had all three of her team’s goals.

Pierce, a junior striker, finished the season with 44 goals and 14 assists. She also had her 100th career goal last month.

This is the final athlete of the week for the 2025-26 school year. The awards will return in the fall.

Cox Mill taps Wes Herlocker as its new head football coach. Herlocker, who was Central Cabarrus' offensive coordinator last season, replaces Breon Holmes.

Cox Mill is looking for its first winning season since 2022. Herlocker is the school's 3rd new coach in 4 years.
