It’s not easy being the default parent. But it’s also not easy being the parent who shows up every single day and still isn’t the one they run to first.
Nine times out of ten, our kids choose me. They walk past Justin to ask me for help while I’m in the bathroom (he does try to intercept them 😂). They call for Mom when Dad is sitting right beside them. And while he doesn’t complain, I know that it hurts. That he sometimes feels invisible to them.
But he keeps showing up. He makes meals and packs lunches, fixes things, drives us places, plays games, reads stories, gives bear hugs, and loves our family in a thousand other quiet ways.
Our family is better because you, Justin. While the kids may not always show it, they do see you. Love isn’t measured by who’s asked to open the snack pouch or who gets to wipe their booties (I wish that was always you 😂)
We love you so much.
We are grateful for you and all the ways you care for us every single day.
Happy Father’s Day 💙
And cheers to the other Invisible Men out there. Thank you for showing up through it all. You are seen and you are appreciated. I hope you feel that way this Father’s Day.
The Invisible Man, a Father’s Day Poem
by Lauren Agans
The day you became their daddy
felt overwhelming and new.
A tiny hand wrapped around your finger
and unlocked a part of you.
You dreamed of sharing wisdom
and adventures yet to span,
but little did you know
you’d become the invisible man.
First baby needed mama
and you gladly played your part.
Filling waters, changing diapers,
and loving them with all your heart.
Trying to be there whenever needed,
doing everything you can,
that’s when you first met the invisible man.
Then came the toddler years
when you stood right by,
yet somehow “Mom” was still the name
they always seemed to cry.
Standing there with open arms,
doing everything you can,
Wondering how you became the invisible man.
You carried sleeping children,
fixed broken things and worked long days,
Shouldered worries no one saw,
and loved us in a thousand ways.
Showing up again and again,
no matter what life had planned,
the quiet strength that’s asked each day
of the invisible man.
But today, and every day,
we want you to know…
We see the early mornings.
We see the late nights.
We see the pressure you carry
and the sacrifices made out of sight.
We see your steady presence,
the patience and the trust,
the countless acts of love you’ve given
simply because it’s us.
And though you may have felt invisible
through the seasons and all of life’s fuss,
the truth is, and always was,
You have never been invisible to us.
