Pope Leo XIV embarked on his first major European trip with a visit to Spain, themed “Lift up your eyes.” One of the highlights of the papal visit was his stop at the Basilica of the Holy Family in Barcelona, where the world did just that as he inaugurated its 564-foot Tower of Jesus Christ. Here is a look at the fascinating history of the basilica that has become the tallest church in the world. Explore more in Catholic All Week: https://catholicnewsherald.com/faith/catholic-living

The summer started off delicious at Sacred Heart Parish with the first of three pie-night fundraising picnics on June 6.

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas baked dozens of fruit pies to honor Essie Walker on her anticipated installation as National Regent this July. Walker will be the first African American woman and the first from the Diocese of Charlotte to hold the position. As National Regent, Walker will oversee the entire organization, create its bylaws, and manage nationwide charitable projects, scholarships and spiritual initiatives. Walker has steadily risen through the organization’s ranks since 2016.

Although picnics, parishioners and pies are always a fun combination, the Catholic Daughters are also raising money to send a local delegate to Walker’s installation ceremony in Iowa. The pie initiative was organized by Salisbury Court member Leigh Ann Norris.
If you missed it, it’s not too late! The next pie night is June 17 and will feature lemon meringue and key lime, and on June 24, there will be chocolate, vanilla and coconut cream pies.

Monsignor Patrick Winslow celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus at Cathedral of St. Patrick in Charlotte. He offered a prayer of consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in conjunction with yesterday’s consecration by the U.S. bishops of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in honor of our nation’s 250th birthday. In a happy coincidence, the feast this year fell on June 12, which is also the 27th anniversary of Monsignor Winslow’s ordination as a priest.
