Let's get into the nitty-gritty on why we have a downburst threat today.

It all comes down to that bottom part of the sounding. We have a 20+ degree spread between our surface temperature and dew point (muggy meter).

This means when rain falls it is falling into an environment where the air is far from saturated. This leads to very quick evaporation.

Evaporation ------> Cooling air
Cold air ----------> Sinking motion
Sinking motion -------> A big ole splat of wind into the surface.

Future radar shows a few isolated storms this afternoon across the Carolinas before much more widespread action tomorrow.

There is PLENTY of thunderstorm fuel to allow these storms to produce some very gusty winds in isolated spots. On top of that when it rains it'll POUR!
