A man seen wielding a knife on the Charlotte light rail was charged days after a video of him went viral.
A passenger on the Charlotte light rail recorded a heated exchange between a man with a knife, and a man and woman who appeared to be together.
The man with the knife could be heard saying “I will kill you,” while the other man repeatedly said, “No you won’t, b****.” The circumstances that led to the exchange were not immediately known.
The woman appeared to intervene and the man with the knife eventually got off the train. Officials with the Charlotte Area Transit System said no injuries were reported, and no 911 calls were made related to this argument.
The video of the altercation quickly circulated online in the hours and days to follow. On June 11, Charlotte police said they had arrested the man with the knife, identified as 36-year-old Derek Hutchinson.
Hutchinson was charged with several crimes, including going armed to the terror of the people, and carrying a concealed weapon.

The faces of the passengers, and the people arguing with Hutchinson, have been blurred because they are not facing charges at this time, and/or were not involved. Our original video had Hutchinson’s face blurred as well, because charges had not yet been brought against him.
