Archaeologists have discovered a well-preserved 500-year-old spice from a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea.

The number of "unique" spices that archaeologists discovered included saffron threads, pepper and ginger. The spice was found on the wreck of a royal ship that sank in the Baltic Sea more than 500 years ago.
The wreck of the Gribshund, owned by King Hans of Denmark and Norway, has been lying off the coast of Ronneby, Sweden since 1495. The ship is believed to have caught on fire and sank when the king attended a political meeting in Sweden.
Lund University researcher Mikael Larsson studied the findings. “This is the only archaeological context where we have found saffron,” he said. So it's very unique and very special."
