You ever notice how criticizing America is so often equated with hating it? You know, the whole ‘if you don’t like it, leave’ crowd. But here’s the thing: I love the *idea* of America. Our little colony ushered in a new era of democracy — that’s a beautiful thing. But it’s just that — an idea. The brilliance of America was always that the idea was more ambitious than the reality. ‘All men are created equal, with inalienable rights.’ Yet when those words were written, poor people couldn’t vote, women were second-class citizens, and we literally owned human beings as property.
But that idea — the idea of America — has always been our North Star, showing us that things *can* be better. And ever since, we’ve been fighting to get closer to that ideal. And because of this perpetual struggle and dissonance, we are! Fighting to bring ourselves closer to that grand idea? That’s not un-American — that’s quite literally the *most* American thing you can do.
