Honestly, I’m not 100% certain that I know what mastering is, but somehow here I am making some kind of living at it. Thanks for the kind words, it’s always a blast working on your records!
Today we're giving it up for Dave Harris at Studio B Mastering for the fantastic job he did mastering Itchy Soul. "What is mastering?" you say? Great question. Nobody knows, even musicians and mastering engineers don't know. Just kidding... it's the final step in making an album. After the mix is finished, it gets bounced to a stereo file. Then the mastering engineer does his/her magic to help balance sonic elements of the mix (such as volume, dynamics, compression, and EQ) and ensure that playback will sound good over a variety of speakers... consider that this music needs to sound great on crappy phone speakers, earbuds, high end headphones, huge speaker systems with subwoofers, etc.
We worked with Dave for the first time on Live in Asheville and we loved what he did, so he was an easy choice for this record. Dave helped give the individual instruments and parts their own space to live in, and somehow simultaneously made the whole thing sound more cohesive and squished together in the best possible way. It's exactly what we wanted. We loved the master as soon as we got it back from him and we highly recommend him to other bands.
