On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 8:36 p.m., the Carolina Volunteer Fire Department was notified of a brush fire via the Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte NC at 11425 Ardrey Kell Rd, near Elon Park Elementary School. While responding Carolina Engine 1 observed a column of heavy black smoke in the area of the Foxhole Recycling Center on Lancaster Highway. Upon arrival, Carolina Engine 1 encountered a large garage pile ablaze to the rear of the property. Due to the fire's scale and materials involved, a box alarm was requested from the Charlotte Fire Department along with a tanker response from Charlotte FD Charlotte Fire Department Station 9 and Indian Land Fire District Station 2 (SC). Under the command of Carolina FD Asst. Chief Tom Glynn, crews initiated a water shuttle operation using portable ponds, with Charlotte Engine 9 securing a hydrant fill site. The plan quickly shifted—bringing in heavy equipment to smother flames with dirt, while firefighters held containment lines using handlines. Charlotte FD and Indian Land FD assisted on scene for about an hour, with Charlotte FD also providing coverage for Carolina’s district throughout the incident—ensuring no lapse in fire protection. Additional tankers from Fort Mill, Waxhaw, and Wesley Chapel FDs were requested as a precaution but canceled en route. The fire was brought under control in about 2.5 hours, with Carolina FD clearing the scene shortly after 1:00 a.m. Fire News Legeros Fire Line

On Monday, June 16, 2025, at 7:03 p.m., the Carolina Volunteer Fire Department, Pineville Fire Department, and Indian Land Fire District responded to a reported structure fire initially reported at 14721 Hawick Manor Ln. Mecklenburg County Fire Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a fire in the attic of a home spreading smoke throughout the structure. Carolina Engine 1 arrived on scene at 14722 Hawick Manor Ln with smoke showing from the attic of a 2-story residential structure. Carolina FD Deputy Chief Renee Lutz (Carolina Engine 1 Officer) transmitted a "Working Fire" as Pineville Fire Department Engine 73 hit a hydrant. Pineville FD Assistant Chief Jeff Long initially took command as Pineville Engine 1 stretched additional lines to the attic, and Pineville Engine 73 conducted a primary search. Fire quickly advanced through the attic, self-venting through the roof and extending to a 2nd floor "bonus room". Due to rapidly advancing fire conditions, Asst. Chief Long requested mutual aid for a "Box Assignment" from the Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte NC. As fire operations continued command was transferred to Carolina Deputy Chief (Carolina 10) Tom Glynn and master stream operations were started utilizing Indian Land FD Tower 2. Firefighters had the bulk of the fire knocked down with 3 lines in operation in approximately 30 minutes. As fire suppression continued, crews rescued 1 cat from the home. The fire was controlled in 34 minutes with crews clearing the scene after approximately 3 hours. The Mecklenburg County Fire Marshals Office determined lightning caused the fire as severe storms moved through. No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred. On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 9:55 a.m., Matthews Fire & EMS Station 2 C-Shift responded to a reported electrical hazard at 931 Industrial Dr. Matthews Engine 22 arrived on the scene and discovered an 18-wheeler that hit a power pole. After further investigation, it was determined that the tractor trailer brought down multiple power poles with transformers and live powerlines onto the roadway. 12 minutes into the incident, Matthews Fire & EMS Captain Willie Tart requested Station 1 to respond with Rescue 8 for multiple bags of speedy dry due to a very large fuel spill after tranformers exploded. Matthews Fire & EMS C-Shift Battalion Chief also went en route due to the magnitude of the incident. Upon arrival of Battalion 1, command was transferred to Matthews Fire & EMS Battalion Chief Peter Blaich. The scope of the scene became larger than when crews initially arrived with multiple downed lines still energized, a 2nd power pole crashing down into multiple vehicles and the uncertainty of whether the transformers spilled polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) or mineral oil. The spill caused approximately 150 gallons of hazardous material to spill onto the roadway. Mutual aid was requested from Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte NC (Engine 39) for a pallet of speedy dry to the scene, along with Mecklenburg EMS Agency - Medic for standby due to active electrical hazards with a high life hazard potential. Matthews firefighters worked for more than 4 hours along with Duke Energy and Matthews Police Department to mitigate the massive spill and electrical hazards. Matthews Fire & EMS Fire Corps responded to the scene with hydration for crews during the lengthy operation. The incident was placed under control at 2:45 p.m., and the scene was turned over to Duke Energy for further cleanup. Matthews Fire & EMS crews returned to service 5 hours after the initial incident. On March 30, 2025, at 8 p.m., after 50 years of dedicated service to the community of southeast Mecklenburg County (Charlotte,NC), Idlewild Volunteer Fire Department officially closed its doors. The Idlewild Volunteer Fire Department began in 1952 as the Oakhurst Volunteer Fire Department tasked with protecting a large rural area of Mecklenburg County. The Oakhurst VFD proudly served until 1975 as it was dissolved after annexation by the City of Charlotte. At that time, the organization of Idlewild VFD began to take shape, which would provide fire protection in an area between Matthews and Mint Hill at a new station on Idlewild Road. The Idlewild Volunteer Fire Department operated for the first 30 years with all volunteer members who responded from home or work when notified of an emergency via a pager. In 1991, Idlewild VFD applied for and was approved to become medical first responders in Mecklenburg County and respond to medical emergencies in the towns of Matthews and Mint Hill. Over the next few years, the Idlewild VFD began around the clock staffing with a combination of part-time paid personnel and volunteer members. During the peak of operation years, the Idlewild VFD responded to 3,000 calls per year. Due to continued residental and commercial growth, the towns of Matthews and Mint Hill were forced to build new fire stations, consequently forcing the closure of Idlewild VFD. Over the past 50 years, 500 individuals have worked proudly at Idlewild VFD and responded to over 60,000 calls for service. On the evening of March 30, 2025, members of the department past and present, friends, family, and the community gathered at the Idlewild Road fire station one last time. Stories, memories, and laughs were exchanged by many as well as tears. As the night drew to a close, Idlewild Volunteer Fire Department Chief Greg Hildreth left members with this message "Tonight, leaving this place, we are going to walk away with lasting memories. When you leave here, know that you've done right by this community. Fire News

On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at 12:24 a.m., Matthews Fire & EMS and Idlewild Volunteer Fire Department responded to an unknown type fire near Sam Newell Rd & East Independence Blvd. MEDIC Central Medical Emergency Dispatch (CMED) was receiving multiple calls reporting conflicting information. A 1st party caller reported trees on fire, and a 3rd party caller reported a home and trees on fire. Matthews Battalion Chief Peter Blaich (Battalion 1) obsevred a large header approaching Sam Newell Rd and upgraded the incident to a "working fire." Battalion Chief Blaich arrived with heavy fire showing from a single story vacant ranch home at 1637 Sam Newell Rd. Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte NC was requested to respond with Tower 3 and Engine 29 (Charlotte Fire Department - Station 29 ). Under command of Battalion Chief Peter Blaich, firefighters stretched 2 initial lines as fire began to spread to the woodline with the entire structure fully involved during a 2nd 360° size-up. Matthews Fire & EMS have responded to fires at the address in the past with a history of vagrants on the property. Six minutes into operations command pivoted to a "defensive" fire attack as the structure was vacant. Charlotte FD Engine 29 & Tower 3 arrived and set up an aerial operation. Multiple lines were stretched as a defensive fire attack continued. Due to structural integrity and unsafe conditions, secondary searches were extremely delayed. The fire was under control in approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. Charlotte Fire Department Engine 39 provided standby coverage at Matthews Fire Station 1 to cover their district. All units cleared the scene after approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire News
