Today, I found myself feeling a little nostalgic and reflecting on the year my journey began.

1968 was a year of unforgettable music, iconic fashions, historic achievements, cultural change, and moments that helped shape the world. Somewhere amid it all, I entered this life, unaware of the experiences, lessons, challenges, victories, and beautiful opportunities that awaited me.

Looking back reminds me that every chapter has contributed to the woman I am today. I celebrate the little girl I once was, the woman I have become, and the purpose that continues to guide my journey.

Here’s to honoring where we started, appreciating how far we have come, and remaining excited about everything still ahead.

Today, August 31, we join the global community in observing the International Day for People of African Descent.

This day celebrates the extraordinary contributions, cultures, resilience, leadership, and achievements of people of African descent throughout Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, and the wider diaspora.

Yet celebration must be accompanied by action.

The 2026 theme, “Expanding the Human Rights of People of African Descent,” reminds us that equality, justice, dignity, representation, and opportunity must become realities for every person—not merely promises.

Our heritage crosses oceans. Our stories connect generations. Our influence has helped shape nations, cultures, economies, and movements for freedom around the world.

Let us honor those who came before us, amplify the voices of those creating change today, and continue building a future in which every person of African descent can live, lead, and thrive with dignity.

Energy poverty is not simply an energy issue—it is a development issue.

When communities lack reliable and affordable energy, the impact reaches far beyond the absence of electricity. It affects education, healthcare, clean water, economic opportunity, entrepreneurship, and the ability of families and communities to thrive.

This is why I have made Ending Energy Poverty a central focus of my advocacy.

As Co-Chair and Co-Founder of the African & Caribbean Energy Network (ACEN), I am committed to helping strengthen the connection between Africa and the Caribbean as we advocate for practical, sustainable solutions that advance SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy for All.

I am particularly passionate about ensuring that women and communities are not simply beneficiaries of the energy transition, but leaders in shaping it.

Energy powers schools.
Energy powers hospitals.
Energy powers businesses.
Energy powers opportunity.
And ultimately, energy powers development.

There is tremendous work ahead of us—but also tremendous opportunity.

Together, we can end energy poverty and build a future where access to reliable, affordable and clean energy is not a privilege, but a foundation for progress.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s warmth, generosity, and joyful spirit touched countless lives. Despite her extraordinary success, she remained humble, gracious, and authentic. Through her music, philanthropy, and commitment to helping others, she made a lasting difference in the world.

I will always cherish her portrayal of Truvy Jones in Steel Magnolias. She brought humor and heart to the role in a way I will never forget. Dolly was also my favorite karaoke artist, and singing “Islands in the Stream” was always one of my happiest moments.

Thank you, Dolly, for the music, laughter, kindness, and light you shared with the world. You will be deeply missed, but your songs and legacy will continue to inspire generations.

Rest peacefully, Dolly. Thank you for everything.

As we step into a new week, we are also reminded that only four months remain in this year.

Some of us are crushing our goals. Some goals are progressing quietly behind the scenes, while others may have fallen by the wayside. Wherever you are, this is not the time for judgment or discouragement, it is time for an honest assessment.

✅What is working?

✅What needs more attention?

✅What should be adjusted, restarted, or released?

A goal delayed is not necessarily a goal denied. Sometimes the strategy needs to change, the timeline needs to be adjusted, or our discipline needs to become stronger.

Four months is still enough time to make meaningful progress.

We may not accomplish everything exactly as planned, but with renewed focus, consistency, and intentional action, we can finish this year much stronger than we are beginning this week.

👉🏽Revisit the vision.

👉🏽Refine the plan.

👉🏽Take the next step.

Let’s make these final months count.

Today, August 23, we observe the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition.

This date recalls the uprising that began during the night of August 22–23, 1791, in Saint-Domingue—present-day Haiti. That courageous resistance became a defining moment in the struggle against slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.

Today, we remember the millions of African men, women, and children who were forcibly taken from their homelands, separated from their families, and subjected to unimaginable brutality.

But remembrance must also honor resistance.

We honor those who fought for freedom, preserved their cultures, protected their dignity, and passed their strength from one generation to the next. Their courage helped transform nations and created enduring connections between Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, and communities throughout the diaspora.

This history must never be forgotten, minimized, or erased. Remembering the truth allows us to recognize the lasting consequences of slavery while recommitting ourselves to confronting racism, exploitation, inequality, and every system that denies another person’s humanity.
