Liberia has charged former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor with drug trafficking, money laundering and other offences as part of an investigation into an alleged transnational narcotics network. The charges were announced by Liberia’s attorney general following her detention while attempting to leave the country.

The case is connected to a major co***ne seizure announced by Liberian authorities in July. Police said almost four tonnes of co***ne, estimated to be worth about $317 million, had been seized in the country and was allegedly destined for Europe.

Howard-Taylor, who served as vice president from 2018 to 2024, is being held as the investigation continues. Authorities have also brought charges against several foreign nationals in connection with the alleged network. The government says the investigation will proceed without political interference.

White South Africa’s AfriForum and the March and March movement have announced a collaborative working group despite major ideological differences between the two organisations. The partnership was announced after AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel and March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma met on August 18.

The groups say they intend to cooperate on issues including community safety, crime, education, legal matters, service delivery and accountability. Illegal immigration and border-control concerns are also among the areas where they have identified common ground.

The alliance has generated debate in South Africa because AfriForum is strongly associated with Afrikaner interests, while March and March is a black-led movement that has campaigned against illegal immigration. Senegal is strengthening its framework for mandatory asset declarations by public officials, as part of efforts to promote transparency and fight corruption.

Under the country’s strengthened legal framework, declarations are required when officials take office and when they leave office, while certain officials are also required to update their declarations annually. Failure to comply can attract legal sanctions.

Uganda and Tanzania have taken a major step toward developing a regional energy hub at Tanzania’s port city of Tanga, with a proposed investment framework worth about $20 billion. Liberia has agreed to accept up to 1,200 third-country deportees from the United States over the next 12 months, in one of the largest such arrangements under President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. The first group of 20 deportees is expected to arrive on Thursday, August 20.

According to Liberian officials, those arriving will include nationals from Africa, North and South America, and the Caribbean. The government says the deportees will be received as “guests,” with the option to seek asylum in Liberia or leave the country if they choose.

The agreement is part of a broader U.S. strategy of sending migrants to countries other than their countries of origin when they cannot legally be returned home.
