After setting social media ablaze last year with his statement that Afrobeats “lacks substance,” Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy is now offering an olive branch.

The comment made during an interview sparked outrage among fans and fellow artists who felt the superstar was throwing shade at a genre that helped catapult him to global fame.

Fast forward to today, Burna is walking it back.

In a recent statement, he clarified that his words were misunderstood and not aimed at the entire Afrobeats scene but rather a call for more storytelling and intentionality in music. He admitted that the way he expressed his thoughts might have been offensive and apologized to fans who felt let down.

While the apology has been met with mixed reactions, some fans appreciate the maturity in acknowledging the impact of his words, while others believe the damage was already done.

Regardless, one thing is clear, Afrobeats continues to thrive, with or without the drama.

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal is facing an investigation regarding the presence of a group of people with dwarfism as entertainers at his 18th birthday party last weekend, Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights told the AFP news agency.

The winger celebrated with a private event in Olivella, about 50km (30 miles) west of Barcelona, which the ministry asked the prosecutor’s office to investigate after a complaint from the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE).

Yamal turned 18 on Sunday, the day after his party on Saturday night, which many of his teammates attended along with celebrities from the music world, including Bizarrap and Bad Gyal.

In a recent interview about her latest book, renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie posed a question to the audience:

“Do your children speak your language? If they don’t, why?”
“Please don’t tell me they’re taking French lessons if they can’t speak Yoruba. If they can’t speak Hausa. If they can’t speak Igbo.”
She wasn’t just making a point about language.

She was talking about confidence. Identity. Self-worth.

Chimamanda spoke about the long shadow of colonialism-the way it made us believe our own languages are less valuable. And how, knowingly or not, many parents are passing that belief on.
