In 1965, Mexican American farmworkers growing grapes in Delano, California, participated in a strike for better pay, safer working conditions and the right to have a union.

Members of the National Farm Workers Association voted to join the walkout, putting thousands of Mexican American workers on the picket lines alongside Filipino farmworkers who started the strike.

Together, they refused to let growers divide them by race. The strike grew into a nationwide grape boycott that lasted for years and ultimately helped workers win union contracts with higher wages, health care and workplace protections.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we're recognizing the Mexican American workers who stood together, fought for dignity on the job and helped change the labor movement.
