Happy Independence Day !!!
One of my favorite things to do when I visit my mom is to cook her favorite dishes. I love it — watching her enjoy something I made just for her fills my heart. But without fail, she’ll tell everyone — neighbors, relatives, friends — “She’s the one cooking… not me.” It comes from that space where society has conditioned moms to feel like they must be the ones doing it all, always. And if they aren’t, it somehow feels wrong or judged.
The truth is, I want to do this for her. She doesn’t get to visit me often, so when I come home, this is my way of showing her love… of saying, “You’ve raised me well, Amma.”
But deep down, it stings a little to see her worry about what others might think. Her health hasn’t been the best in recent years, and if anything, I just want her to rest. I wish she could simply enjoy the moment without explaining herself.
I hope someday, we rewrite these unspoken rules.
That it’s okay — more than okay — for daughters to take over, for moms to receive.
And for love to be served in the form of rasam, sambar, or whatever makes them smile — without guilt, without apology.
So happy to be back to join my friend Kanchi queen vidhya on her
