THE OMAHA ACTOR RODNEY A. GRANT:
Grant was abandoned by his parents, and raised by grandparents on the Omaha Rez. He starred in "Dances with Wolves", "Geronimo, an American Legend" "Hawkeye" and a list of other films. Mr Grant illustrates a clash of cultures here at an awards ceremony, by appearing in both the customary evening attire and a traditional headdress. Blessed are those who know themselves, and remember where they came from.

Sacheen Littlefeather who refused to accept an Oscar On Marlon Brando behalf in 1973 has finally received and apology from The Academy.
When she stepped on stage at the Oscar’s this is what she said.
“Hello. My name is Sacheen Littlefeather. I'm Apache and I am president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee. I'm representing Marlon Brando this evening and he has asked me to tell you in a very long speech, which I cannot share with you presently because of time but I will be glad to share with the press afterwards, that he very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry – excuse me – and on television in movie reruns, and also with recent happenings at Wounded Knee. I beg at this time that I have not intruded upon this evening and that we will in the future, our hearts and our understandings will meet with love and generosity. Thank you on behalf of Marlon Brando.”
Despite the boos and jeers coming from the audience, she maintained her composure. John Wayne attempted to physically attack her as she exited the platform and had to be restrained by security. By claiming that he was giving the medal on behalf of "all the cowboys shot in all the John Ford Westerns," Clint Eastwood made fun of her. Littlefeather was thereafter put on a Hollywood blacklist and never again engaged in the film business.
On September 17, 2022, Littlefeather will return to the Academy once again as a guest of honor.

John Trudell was a Native American activist, poet, and musician who fought for Indigenous rights and raised awareness about social and environmental issues. Born in 1946 on the Santee Sioux Reservation in Nebraska, Trudell witnessed the injustices faced by Native communities, which fueled his passion for change. He dedicated his life to advocating against the colonization of Native lands and the abuse of Indigenous rights, using his powerful words to ignite change.

Trudell also emphasized the importance of preserving Native culture and protecting sacred lands, believing that their connection to the land was intertwined with their identity and spirituality. Through his poetry and music, he expressed the struggles and resilience of the Native American experience, touching the hearts of people worldwide. Trudell's legacy continues to inspire and encourage future generations to fight for justice and advocate for the rights of Indigenous peoples.

"All human beings are descendants of tribal people who were spiritually alive, intimately in love with the natural world, children of Mother Earth. When we were tribal people, we knew who we were, we knew where we were, and we knew our purpose. This sacred perception of reality remains alive and well in our genetic memory. We carry it inside of us, usually in a dusty box in the mind's attic, but it is accessible".

Among the first written records of the Blackfeet Indians were the journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who contacted the tribe in about 1806. Unfortunately, those descriptions largely misrepresented Blackfeet women. “As Western men, they only saw what they wanted to see—women with less virtue,” said Susan Webber, a Montana state representative who also teaches Indian women’s studies and philosophy at Blackfeet Community College. Traditionally, Blackfeet women owned their homes and were subservient to no one. “Our role was always ‘sits beside him,’ not ‘sits behind him’ or ‘walks three paces behind him.’ In our ways, women are men’s greatest support and greatest weapon,” says Webber. What early explorers and anthropologist often failed to recognize was the balance of power that existed between genders in Native American communities like the Blackfeet.
Buffalo hunts demonstrate this interdependence between genders. For the Blackfeet, the women depended on the men to hunt the bison while the men depended on the women to process and transform the buffalo hides. After butchering the animal, the women then had to prepare the buffalo hides for its many uses, such as constructing the tipi. Tanning hides is an arduous process – each buffalo hide took two full days of work to prepare, though some parts took longer such as drying the hide in the sun. A woman of average skill was said to be able to tan as many as 25 hides in a season. One tipi could require up to 12 to 14 buffalo hides. Erecting the tipi itself was no small feat, either. A tipi cover weighed close to 100 lbs. The wooden poles (as seen in the travois of Russell’s paintings discussed previously) were typically 18 to 20 feet long each. The average tipi was 14 to 16 feet in diameter and stood about 17 feet tall on average.
In the days when leather was a basic article of daily life for the Blackfeet, a woman was judged by her tanning skills. The first stage of tanning turns a fresh hide into rawhide, whic
