Choosing a school for your child is a big decision. As parents, we know you might not have the time to visit each school individually. The Charlotte Parent School Fair is a unique opportunity for area parents (and kids!) to learn about the different private, public, and charter school options available to them - all in one place. The event features schools, information sessions, and vendors. Kids can enjoy balloon art and story time. We will have special appearances from Wicked characters as well as Spider Man! This event is FREE to attend. RSVP now at the link below for the chance to win a $250 prize pack of local restaurant gift cards; tickets to sponsor Charlotte Ballet's production of Nutcracker(Dec. 5-21, Belk Theater); or a family four-pack to How the Grinch Stole Christmas via Blumenthal Arts (Dec. 23-28, Belk Theater)!

This event has been held annually since 2016, and it is the only event in the area where parents can learn about school choice all in one place. Want to get involved? If you are a school interested in participating or a company interested in sponsoring the event, email publisher Andy Smith at [email protected].

Ashley Ausman is a writer and former AP English teacher at Charlotte Catholic. She left teaching to focus on a pressing need she saw in her students: crafting their college admission essays. She launched The Essay Architect, where she helps students through a process to discover what to write and how to write it.

Here, the mom of three talks to us about how technology is impacting student writing, the joys and struggles of having children years apart, and the important advice she received about marriage.

Anna Stallmann is a public relations ace and owner of Anna Stallmann Communications, a women-led firm that serves a diverse group of local and national businesses and nonprofits. She’s also a mom of two daughters, Savannah, 6, and Madeleine, 4. Earlier this year, her girls requested a playhouse in their backyard. “I started looking on Amazon and found really basic ones, but I knew they’d outgrow them,” Anna says. “Everything we found that was bigger was thousands of dollars. So my husband, who does, like, no, handyman stuff, said, ‘I’m gonna do this.’” Anna and her husband, Chris, spent the next two-and-a-half months designing and building a custom playhouse, complete with flower boxes, a reading loft, and plenty of space for hosting tea parties. Now, she says, it’s where all the kids on her block want to be.

Throughout the month of July, Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital is collecting toys for kids in their care. Toy donations are at their peak during the winter holidays, but the need continues all year long. Around this time, their Child Life team’s toy supply is running low.

By participating now, you’re helping restock shelves and make sure every child admitted to their hospital receives a little joy — no matter the season.
