âCRIMES FROM THE CLOUDS: JUNTA AIRSTRIKES DEVASTATE CIVILIAN AREAS ACROSS KAWTHOOLEI
âKAWTHOOLEI â Reports from the ground confirm a horrific escalation in aerial aggression by the Myanmar military junta (SAC) against civilian populations across the liberated territories of Kawthoolei. Junta airstrikes earlier this month, the skies above Karen villages remain a source of terror, as fighter jets and drones continue to drop heavy ordinance on schools, homes, and places of refuge.
âA Trail of Destruction
âThe images emerging from recent strikes (pictured above) tell a story of deliberate, calculated destruction. In Kler Lwee Htu District (Nyaunglebin) and Mutraw District (Hpapun), the landscape is now scarred by the charred remains of civilian infrastructure.
âTargeting the Vulnerable: In the past several weeks, documented strikes have hit villages such as Kyaung Gone and Dala Hseik. Most tragically, recent reports confirm the deaths of over 41 civilians, including 18 children. In one instance, a pregnant woman was killed during a midnight strike, her unborn child lost before ever seeing the light of day.
âInfrastructure in Ruins: The photographs show the skeletal remains of what were once community hubs. Tin roofs have been shredded like paper, and wooden support beamsâthe backbone of Karen village architectureâlie splintered and blackened by fire.
âTotal Loss of Property: A scorched minivan (Figure 1) stands as a grim monument to the loss of civilian mobility and livelihood. These are not military targets; these are the tools of daily life, now rendered into ash by Chinese and Russian-made aircraft.
âThe Human Cost
âBeyond the physical ruins, the psychological toll on the Karen people is immeasurable. The sound of an engine in the sky no longer signals trade or travel, but the immediate need to dive into makeshift foxholes and bunkers.
â"They wait until we are in our homes, or until the children are gathered," said one local village leader from Mutraw. "They do not fight our soldiers in the forest; they fight our grandmothers and our students from the clouds."
âCurrently, it is estimated that over 300 villagers in Ler Doh Township are being held as human shields by ground troops following these airstrikes, preventing families from fleeing to the Thai-Myanmar border.
âA Call for International Action
âThe Karen National Union (KNU) and the Karen Peace Support Network have issued urgent pleas to the international community. The message is clear:
âCut the Fuel: The junta cannot fly without jet fuel. Sanctions on aviation fuel suppliers are the only way to ground these "death machines."
âArms Embargo: The K8W aircraft and 500-pound bombs used in these attacks are being supplied by foreign actors who are complicit in these war crimes.
âCross-Border Aid: With an hundred thousands newly displaced and living in the jungle, the need for medical supplies, food, and tarpaulins is at a breaking point.
âCurrent Situation
âAs of this evening, April 20, 2026, smoke continues to rise from the hills in Kawthoolei.
