I'm super excited to see this! Last summer, I drove to Indiana to ask Sweetwater to carry this specific PA system because no one else made one as perfect for elementary and middle schools. Today, I saw that they are now carrying it! This is what I bought to take into elementary schools for concerts and musicals (along with other parts of the overall system).

2,400W Powered Stereo Column PA System with Subwoofer, 5-ch Mixer, Bluetooth, Digipro G4 Amplifier, and 56-bit DSP

Hello, neighbors. It's a beautiful day to learn about sound systems. Let's imagine we're building a special neighborhood of sound, where each part has an important job to do.

Our Sound Neighborhood

The Sources
In our neighborhood, we have friendly visitors like microphones, keyboards, and guitars with special pickups. Even your telephone or computer can be a visitor here. These are the voices and sounds that want to be heard.

The Mixer
Next, we have a very busy helper called the mixer. It's like a kind house that welcomes all our sound visitors. It listens to each one, helps them sound their best, and then sends them on their way to meet new friends.

The Processor
Sometimes, we have a wise friend called the processor. It helps our sounds fit perfectly in different rooms, just like how we choose the right clothes for different weather.

The Amplifier
The amplifier is like a strong, gentle giant. It takes our quiet sounds and makes them big and bold, so everyone can hear them clearly.

The Speakers
Finally, we have the speakers. They're like magic boxes that turn all our sound friends into beautiful music we can hear. Each speaker has two special parts - one for low sounds and one for high sounds.

Remember, neighbors, it's important to take good care of our speaker friends. If they get tired or hurt, they might not be able to sing as beautifully.

In our sound neighborhood, we can put speakers in many places. We can have them on stage for the performers, in the back for people far away, and even backstage so everyone can hear the music.

Isn't it wonderful how all these parts work together to create beautiful sounds? In our neighborhood of sound, everyone has an important role to play, just like in our real neighborhoods.

🔉Part 3 of 3: Dialing in EQ—BEFORE the Mixer!🎛️

We saw in parts 1 & 2 that the first places to set equalization is with song arrangement, mic selection and mic placement. There's one more place you might be able to shape the tone of your sound before it arrives in the mixer. Here's where:

On the Mic ✨: Some condenser mics have a built-in low-cut switch (also known as a high pass filter). This switch lets you roll off the low frequencies right at the mic. This can help with feedback prevention.

In the Wireless Transmitter 🎤: Your wireless mic system might come with a few EQ tricks up its sleeve too. I actually don't like using EQ options built into wireless mic transmitters because I can usually accomplish comparable or better EQ on the mixer and then it's in a place I can make adjustments more easily. But it might be an option in your wireless mics if you need it.

On an Electronic Instrument 🎸: Many bass guitars and keyboards have their own tone or EQ controls. Play around with those first and find the sweet spot before you start tweaking the EQ on your mixer!

That's all for this series! If there's something you'd like to know about sound, drop a comment below! 💬👇

✨ Let's talk about MIC SELECTION AND PLACEMENT 🎤as a tool for tone shaping!

💡Pro Tip: "The best EQ is to not need EQ!" Experiment with mic placement to find the most pleasant sound BEFORE applying any mixer channel EQ.

🎤Many handheld mics sound more bass-heavy when you get really close to them and more natural as you move back. You can experiment with mic distance to see where the mic sounds best.

🎹 Acoustic instruments generally have a sweet spot where they sound their best for a given instrument and microphone. 🎻 As you move the mic, listen through the sound system.

🎙️ Before You Start: Make sure to disengage or zero-out the mixer channel equalizer to avoid any channel EQ influence during your mic placement test.

🎶✨ Did you know the best equalizer has NO CONTROLS? Whaaaaaat?! 😲 It’s true! The first place to set equalization is with the SONG ARRANGEMENT. Professional engineers often say, "a great song arrangement will mix itself." 🎧

If you’re using pre-recorded tracks, the pro recording team has your back. But for live concerts, 🎤 it’s crucial to consider the frequency range of each instrument to prevent conflicting sounds. For example, children's voices sit in the same frequency range as the middle notes of a violin. One violin can obscure a whole choir if played in it's middle range while the choir is singing. 🎻👧 The same can happen with the middle keys of a piano.

Think of it as a conversation where only one speaks at a time. When singers are singing, keep the piano 🎹 to the low or high notes and avoid the middle range unless the singers are pausing. 🛑 The bass guitar and kick drum can join in much louder during singing as their sounds sit outside the vocal range and won’t usually cover up the voices. 🎸🥁

Before you tweak your EQ or mix, start with your arrangement! 🎵 Your mix will thank you. 😉

WHY SOUND AMAZING?

We’re out to radically raise the bar of audio quality in places that have traditionally settled for less than amazing results.

We’ve worn the shoes of soloist, director, choir member, instrumentalist, lead actor, booster, parent, audience, radio program director and engineer. We understand the hours you put into rehearsals, concerts, services, competitions and fund raising. We also cringe with you when the sound system rings and makes the audience jump in self defense.

Here’s what we think amazing means:

  • Foremost, it means having a committed and knowledgeable ally that never stops working on ways to make your events and recordings better. Sometimes this means deep research and experimentation to solve the sound puzzle your special situation requires. Other times it means emergency emailing your tracks because you forgot your CD for the Uptown Christmas Tree Lighting performance. The high value we place on “We’ve got your back!” is partly why our clients come back year after year.
