Rebel Records of Virginia was founded in 1960 and is the first record label devoted exclusively to Bluegrass music. Known for innovation and excellence over a 50-plus year period, Rebel has introduced many of the most important artists of the genre, from the Country Gentlemen and Seldom Scene to the Steep Canyon Rangers, Blue Highway, Lonesome River Band and IIIrd Tyme Out. In addition to its cutting edge presence in contemporary Bluegrass, the label has also been a home for legendary traditional artists like Ralph Stanley, Dave Evans and Larry Sparks. Like so many, our hearts were broken when we heard the news of Chet Rhodes’ passing. We have been slow to post because it has been difficult to find the right words to express what Chet meant to the Rebel Records family, and especially to Mark Freeman.

Mark shares:
“Besides Wanda Dalton at County Sales, Chet was my father’s right-hand man. He was a loyal and dedicated employee of County Sales and, when my dad started Record Depot, it was an easy decision to put Chet in charge.
So much of my knowledge of modern music -- whether it be bluegrass, country, rock, blues, etc. -- and its history can be attributed to the many hours I spent working at the warehouse there in Roanoke as a high schooler packing orders or sweeping the floors, just hearing his many stories or soaking up his opinions on certain artists and albums. Those were special times, and I just wish we could have one more conversation.

RIP, Chet. You will be greatly missed.”
