The US Senate has unanimously passed a new bill nicknamed the "Maverick Act," which would transfer three of the Navy's last surviving F-14D Tomcats from a desert boneyard in Arizona to the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, with the goal of restoring at least one of them to flying condition.

The bill was introduced by Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana, a former Navy SEAL, and co-sponsored by Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, a retired naval aviator and former NASA astronaut. It passed the Senate on April 28 and now heads to the House.

But here is what makes this story extraordinary. The three Tomcats are not random airframes. One of them, BuNo 159437, carried the call sign "Fast Eagle 107" during the January 4, 1989 Gulf of Sidra incident, when two Libyan MiG-23s were shot down by F-14s launched from the USS John F. Kennedy. That aircraft has now been sitting in the Arizona desert for years, waiting to fly again.

The bill is named after Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, the Navy pilot played by Tom Cruise in "Top Gun." If the House passes it in time, one of the three Tomcats could fly again as part of America's 250th birthday celebrations on July 4. The last operational US Navy F-14 was retired on September 22, 2006.

After 20 years in the desert, the most iconic fighter in American naval aviation history may finally be coming home.
