Medicare costs can add up, but you may qualify for programs that can help lower what you pay.

If you have limited income and resources, a Medicare Savings Program may help pay for Medicare premiums and, depending on the program, deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

You may also qualify for Extra Help, which can help with the cost of Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.

And here’s something important: even if you don't think you qualify, it may still be worth applying. Eligibility rules can vary by state, and some states have different income and resource rules.

Don’t assume you have to pay every Medicare cost out of pocket.

What Happens If Your Medicare Plan Changes Its Benefits?

Your Medicare plan can change its costs, coverage, benefits, provider network, and prescription drug coverage from one year to the next. That’s why it’s important not to automatically assume your current plan will remain the best fit.

Each fall, your plan sends an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) explaining changes that will take effect in January. Take time to review:

• Monthly premiums and other costs
• Covered benefits and services
• Prescription drug coverage
• Doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies in the network
• Changes to copays, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket costs

If your plan no longer meets your needs, Open Enrollment runs October 15–December 7, giving you an opportunity to change your Medicare health or drug coverage for the following year.

Don’t wait until January to discover your benefits changed. Review your coverage now and make sure your plan still works for you.

Scammers may call pretending to be from Medicare and claim that your Medicare card is expiring, being replaced, or that you need to pay a fee for a new one.

Remember:

• Medicare cards are provided for free.
• Don’t give your Medicare Number, Social Security number, bank information, or credit card information to an unexpected caller.
• Don’t trust caller ID — scammers can make a call appear to come from a legitimate number.

Medicare Myth: “Medicare Covers Everything.”

❌ MYTH! Medicare provides important health coverage, but it doesn’t cover every healthcare expense.

For example, Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover:
• Most routine dental care
• Hearing aids
• Routine eye exams for glasses or contacts
• Long-term care
• Certain other services and supplies

And remember: coverage can differ depending on whether you have Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, or supplemental coverage. Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer additional dental, vision, and hearing benefits.

Don’t assume your Medicare card covers it all. Know what your plan actually covers before you need care.
