By mixing 1.5 tons of plaster and exhausting two pairs of overalls, local sculptor Aubrey Charnell helped put a fresh face on the refurbished Chattanooga Bank Building. Guests at the soon-to-open Waymark Hotel may not even notice her restorative ceiling work, which blends seamlessly with the original, century-old ornaments.

Despite a monthslong effort to change its fate, the Medical Arts Building on McCallie Avenue is still scheduled for demolition. The 10-story tower has stood for nearly 100 years and shares a spot on the National Register of Historic Places with siblings scattered across the country.
