At this week’s ASMFC Annual Meeting, fisheries managers chose to maintain status quo for striped bass, recognizing 30-year low fishing mortality rates, but fell short on menhaden, approving a quota that ignores ecosystem science and undermines striped bass recovery.

ASA continues to call for science-driven, ecosystem-based management to ensure sustainable fisheries for all.

The menhaden debate is raging in Louisiana too!

The menhaden debate is raging in Louisiana too!

The latest science is clear: Atlantic menhaden are being overharvested, leaving predator species like striped bass without the forage they need to recover and thrive.

The updated ecosystem fishing mortality target calls for a 54% reduction in the menhaden quota to restore balance and sustainability.

The striped bass fishery drives $13 billion in economic output, supports more than 104,000 jobs, and contributes $7.7 billion to GDP each year. Balancing menhaden harvests with science isn’t just smart ecology, it’s economic common sense.

Take action: tell ASMFC to cut the Atlantic menhaden quota by 54%. https://www.votervoice.net/mobile/KAF/campaigns/130862/respond
