Coach Matt Swanson’s Bio and Introduction to Bulldog Nation
I am beginning my 27th year in education. I have spent all 27 years in the special education classroom. I have coached basketball for 26 of my 27 years in education. I have coached girls' basketball for 23 years. I started my coaching career as an assistant coach at LaFayette High School under legendary coach Craig Parrott, who won a state championship at Chattooga and was head coach at UTC for 10 years. After serving as an assistant for 3 years at LaFayette, I joined my high school coach, Jay Williams, at Northwest Whitfield. I returned to LaFayette Middle School to serve as the head coach for girls and boys during the 2002-2003 school year. I was promoted to head varsity girls coach at LaFayette High School in 2004. I would serve as the Head Girls' varsity coach at LaFayette for 10 seasons. I collected over 120 wins during that 10-year stint at LaFayette, with my best season of 18-5 and winning the sub-region championship with a 10-0 record in 2007. In 2017, I accepted a job as the head girls' basketball coach at Gordon Central High School in Calhoun. I was also named the athletic director for Gordon Central that same year. Gordon Central had never qualified for the state playoffs when I took the position. I was fortunate enough to lead them to their first playoff appearance in the 2017-18 season. We qualified for the state playoffs all 4 years that I served as the head coach. I have over 200 career wins as a head coach, which is a testament to great players, great assistants, and hard work. I served as head girls' coach from 2017 to 2021 and athletic director from 2017 to 2022 at Gordon Central. I am beginning my 4th year at Trion. I have served as an assistant girls' basketball coach, assistant volleyball coach, assistant middle school football coach, and head middle school baseball coach for the past 3 years. Trion is a special place that I am blessed to be a part of.
I have been married to Kesha Swanson for the past 26 years. She is beginning her 29th year as a teacher at Gilbert Elementary. I have a 23-year-old son, Landon, who recently got married and is starting his 2nd year teaching 5th grade at Gilbert Elementary. My youngest son, Hayden, is 21 and will graduate this spring from GNTC. He is currently a substitute teacher at Trion and will help our girls' basketball program with social media responsibilities. I am looking forward to being the head girls' basketball coach at Trion High School. We will continue to build on the success we have had over the past 5 seasons. I enjoyed working with Coach Brown the past 3 seasons and consider him a great friend. Building a relationship with our girls in our program over the past 3 years has helped speed up the transition. They know what to expect of me and understand what I expect of them. Go Dogs!!
