Doing a 40th anniversary thing today: 40 years ago today The Pogues released Rum So**my & The Lash. Kudos to The Pogues for introducing a lot of rock and rollers and alt music lovers to a new sound. I had the enormous pleasure of seeing Jon Auer, co-founding member, a few months ago in Nashville taking the stage with Big Star Quintet. What an amazing night of music that was. Enjoy!

Spinning first up today: Kicked off the day with some Concrete Blonde, one of my favorite bands of the 1980s post-punk, alt genre. Originally named Dream 6, Concrete Blonde changed its name after Mike Stipe (R.E.M.) suggested the change -- they were both in I.R.S label. I love the hard edge guitar-first sound of this band and obviously its blonde-ness. Any Concrete Blonde fans out there?

Sad to see this. For The Love Of Money introduced me to Motown and a music genre love I've held since. R.I.P. and jam on in the afterlife. ☮️❤️🎵🎶

The great Anthony Jackson, who literally and figuratively expanded the range of the electric bass, has died at the age of seventy-three. Maybe best known for the signature bassline in the O’Jays’ “For the Love of Money” (so essential to the song that Gamble and Huff cut him in on the copyright), Jackson played with an incredible range of R&B, pop, and jazz artists: Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Quincy Jones, Pat Metheny, Chaka Khan, George Benson, David Sanborn, Diana Ross, Dave Grusin, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, the Four Tops, Anita Baker, Lee Ritenour, Mike Stern, Gato Barbieri, Steve Khan, Joe Jackson, Roberta Flack, Billy Paul, Lou Rawls, Patti Austin, Eric Gale, Teena Marie, Dave Liebman, Sergio Mendes, Gerry Mulligan, Eumir Deodato, Stephane Grappelli, Lena Horne, Buddy Rich, many more. I got to witness his amiable, humble personality firsthand during Steve Bailey’s Covid-era Berklee Zoom summit for bassists and drummers who had played with Steely Dan over the years. RIP, AJ. Respect. —DB

Shout out loud for Ace. We've lost so many great music artists this year, all should be recognized. I was never a huge Kiss fan but I always dug what they stood for and very much liked a few of their songs. Interesting take at the beginning of this video when asked why did you pick this song to play.

I recently watched their concert on Qello from Nuremburg from maybe 10-12 years ago. They rehearsed hard to bring a great performance and you can tell by how tight they are, everyone equally to the sound. Great band.

By all accounts Ace was a genuine man and good human. Undoubtedly a great songwriter. So many guitarists on the planet started playing because of Ace. Rest in peace my good man. Enjoy.

The music world lost John Lodge this weekend from Moody Blues (bass and vocals). This is one of my favorite bands and one of my earliest music influences. A lot of people think Merseybeat or English R&B when you ask to describe the Moody Blues. To me they were purely rock and roll.
I wish healing and peace to Lodge's family, friends and music brothers and sisters. Here's one of my favorites by them. Rock on, John.
