•Kuhn & Scotch & Peated Scotch

This is a truly unique review today. This has been a company I have wanted to try for awhile now. A very big shoutout to Local Heros for sending us over these samples! Trust me...you'll want to try one of these too after reading these notes 👇🏼

●Sherry Bomb

Nose👃: Seagrass, creamy vanilla, baking spices, cinnamon, red apple, cherry, toasted malt.

Palate👅: Creamy vanilla, red apple, cherry, cinnamon toast crunch, sea salt, caramel, light oak. Overall light palate.

●Sweet Peat

Nose👃: Same creamy vanilla, butterscotch, pear, sea salt topped toffee, caramel, light elegant smoke.

Palate👅: Velvety, creamy palate. Vanilla, butterscotch, sea salt topped toffee, more peat influence but still very soft.

●Big Smoke

Nose👃: Sea salt, black pepper, thick vanilla, lemon zest, heavier smoke but not over done.

Palate👅: Way more peat here. BBQ smoke, sea salt, ripe pear, to***co. Very long finish.

This lineup was nothing short of a extravagant ride! Through every pour that signature creamy, fruity, elegance carried on boldly. While all three were phenomenal, I particular enjoyed the sweet peat. The flavors and aromatics were extraordinary! Sweet, creamy, and a super enjoyable light smoke. For people who are new to peated whisky or looking for something interesting, we feel this is a perfect place to look. Again massive thanks to Local Heros for sending these samples! We most definitely will be getting some bottles after trying these!

●Hollow Creek Founders' Journey 10 year Rye

Watching a small distillery grow and make new releases is something truly special. One of my favorite small town distillery's I've had the privilege of finding is Hollow Creek Distillery in SC in South Carolina. Recently they had a huge event releasing some of their new whiskey. A 19 year bourbon distilled in Tennessee, a 10 year Rye distilled in Indiana, and their very own 8 year bourbon distilled and aged in house in South Carolina. But today we look at their Rye 👇🏼

Mashbill🌾: 95% Rye 5% Malted Barley

Stats🧬: 54.5% ABV (109 proof) 10 years old.

Nose👃: The aromas are deep, rich, sweet, and fairly complex. Caramel, brown sugar, and maple lead. You quickly get reminded this is a rye though because rich baking spices come up. Then towards the backend more sweetness is present with honey followed by deep dark oak and a nice sour dough aroma too.

Palate👅: The palate is definitely less sweet and more tannic but not loosing it's complexity. Immediately you can tell this is a rye. Big baking spices and minty flavors burst through. On the mid palate things sweeten up with flavors of brown sugar, caramel & honey. More tannic here but that deep dark oak flavor returns combined with a really nice sour dough/ baked goods flavor.

Corkpop🍾: 8/10 fairly loud pop. Kuhn got up to investigate so it won't her approval.

This is the epitome of why you should support local and small distillerys! Big flavor in small places. And as far as rye's go, this one ranks pretty high for us. This a huge deal for a little South Carolina distillery. Getting to see where they came from, where they are now, and where they are headed is so special! We personally are so excited to see where Hollow Creek goes from here. We may have to review their new 8 year release too 👀. What's your favorite small/ local distillery?

●Reedwood Empire Devil's Tower

What better way to end August than to be introduced to Redwood Empire Whiskey? Specifically this bad boy 👇🏼

Mashbill🌾: 54% corn, 38% rye, 4% wheat, and 4% malted barley

Stats🧬 : Toasted and Chared No3. Batch 3. 49.5% ABV (99 proof).

Nose👃: If a bourbon could encompass closing out summer and introducing autumn this would be it. This super complex combo of Spicy banana bread and pumpkin pie enter the chat. Notes of Baking spices, banana, baked goods, pumpkin, vanilla cream, toasty-ness, and a bit of oak.

Palate👅: Wow oh WOW! The aromas definitely return to the palate but leveled up. That spicy banana bread leads with banana, toasted bread, nuttiness, brown sugar, and some really nice baking spices. Pumpkin pie chimes in heavier here too with pumpkin spice, toasty crust, vanilla ice cream, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The balance between spicy, savory, and a bit of sweet is wonderful here!

Corkpop🍾: 5/10 Not the loudest or sharpest. Kuhn wasn't impressed but gave an acknowledgable glance.

Despite getting notes of bannana bread and pumpkin pie this high rye bourbon wasn't overly sweet. Hint of sweet was there especially on the back end. But the big notes of fruty, nutty, and spiciness really elevated the dram. I've heard some great things about Redwood Empire. So glad we finally got to try one of their whiskeys! Definitely will be teying more from them! Do you enjoy Redwood Empire?

●Kirkland Bottled-in-Bond
The time is FINALLY here! I've heard about it. I've seen the reviews. And today...we look at Costco Whiskey!

Stats🧬: 50% ABV (100 Proof). 4 years old. Barton 1792 distillate.

Mashbill🌾: 74% corn, 18% rye, 8% malted barley.

Nose👃: Initially the aromas are sweet. Traditional bourbon notes are upfront like brown sugar, oak, and caramel. Quite a lot of fruit is present as well like apple, banana, and orange peel. Then on the backend a bit of spice lingers.

Palate👅: Matching the aromas those traditional bourbon notes lead with sweet brown sugar, caramel, and oak. More spice is here like baking spices specifically cinnamon. That fruitiness returns with apple, banana, and orange peel. There is a little bit of biscuit like flavors on the back end too.

Corkpop🍾: 10/10 We got to pop this around friends while camping. Being super loud, sharp, like an announcement just made the evening. Of course the corkpop snob Koo approved.

I've heard about Kirkland bourbon in different conversations but haven't had the opportunity to try it until now. I was actually surprised. I don't know what I necessarily expected but knowing it's 1792 juice I should've known it would be 100% solid! While I wouldn't say this bourbon is life changing, I would say it makes for a great sipper especially with friends! Not in your face, no weird flavors, just good bourbon. Have you had this one?

●Summer Drams

Hot days, water time, and a good dram always go good together. Whether we are at the beach, the pool, the lake, or on the back porch while the sun sets, these are our go to summer dram this season!

●Green River Honey
Sweet honey and lemon grass flavors paried with a tad bit of spice goes perfect while in the pool.

●Redwood Empire Devil's Tower
While spicy, this dram also carries some great pumpkin pie and bannana bread notes that are the bomb during a sunset.

●Jimmy Red Sherry Cask
At the beach? This Sherry finished bourbon washes up some amazing aromas and flavors of Cherry, oak, and creamy-ness just like those beautiful waves.

●Soubeyran Ex-Tequila Finish
A day paddleboarding on the lake with this dram is phenomenal! Super refreshing, tangy, with heavy agave influence.

●Old Forester 1920
Chilling in the hot tub with this classic banger makes for a great time. Think dessert in a glass. Big chocolate, oaky, and that signature OF profile.

●Entry .07 "Is younger whiskey better whiskey?"

In short...sometimes! Sometimes that younger spirit carries a uniqueness to it. And with this Calumet 15 year that was the case for me. The overall experience, flavor profile, and special notes I got just made this bourbon pop!

Now obviously a 15 year old whiskey is not young in the grand scheme of aged bourbon. But in this example I am comparing the 15 year to the 16 and 18 year olds.

Both the 16 and 18 are great based on flavor. But something about that 15 year was calling to me.

●Entry .05 "How to taste Whiskey."

What is "tasting" Whiskey? Simply put, it's the flavors or notes you get from the Whiskey. So how exactly do you pick out flavors? Here are a couple tips 👇🏼

●Eat Food
What does eating food have to do with whiskey notes? When someone says they get a cherry note, that doesn't mean there are actually cherries in the whiskey. It means the flavors are reminiscent of cherries. So when you eat a meal, really think about the flavors you're tasting. Spicy, sweet, sour. If you can do that, then it will be easier to pick out notes in your Whiskey. Because the flavors you get in the glass will be reminiscent of things you have tasted in the past.

●Try a wide range of Whiskey
The world of Whiskey can be daunting. But here's what we recommend based on what helped us. Try one of each: Bourbon, Tennessee Whiskey, Scotch, peated Scotch.
These whiskies really helped shape our palate and flavor spotting in the beginning. Bourbons and Tennessee Whiskey will tend to be a little sweeter compared to some Scotch. And peated Scotch will be more smoky. Each spirit will be a contrast to the last. That contrast can help you identify notes. Like having steak then cake. Two completely different flavor realms, both full of flavor.

●Enjoy the experience
Whiskey is all about the experience. So enjoy all aspects of it. Some drams you'll love. Others not so much. Both will help shape your palate and mold your flavor tree. So pour a glass and really try to focus on what your smell and taste. Start with basics. Is it sweet, spicy, or sour? From there try going a little deeper.

You don't have to immediately jump to top shelf Whiskey to get good flavors. Start small. Want to go up a rank? Try it and see what you enjoy. Don't want to commit to a bottle? Go to a local bar and get a pour. Practice makes perfect but here we aren't looking for perfection. Just what tastes good to YOU.

Jack Daniel's Old No. 7: This was the Whiskey that started our journey. The Whiskey I practiced picking out notes with.
Sweet, oaky, and a little spice.

●J.T Meleck

JT Meleck Distillers has really surprised me this year with their amazing whiskey. Jesse Hutchins was kind enough to send us some samples of J.T. Melecks other offerings. So let's get into it 👇🏼

●SiB Cask Strength (123.7 proof)

Nose👃: Maple syrup, vanilla, toasty, oak, caramel apple.

Palate👅: Chocolate, maple syrup, vanilla, baking spices, oak, thick mouthfeel.

●Pinch Proof (125 proof)

Nose👃: Not as sweet as the other two. Bitter oak, slight maple syrup, vanilla, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, baking spices.

Palate👅: Quite drying, higher tannins. Bitter oak, maple-yness, creamy vanilla, dark chocolate, cayenne pepper.

●Small Batch (96 proof)

Nose👃: Vanilla, cocoa powder, baking spice, oak.

Palate👅: Creamy vanilla, cocoa powder, maple-y sweetness, baking spice, oak.

All of these are amazing! I cannot recommend J.T Meleck enough! They have been one of my favorite distillerys I have found this year. All these have a similar base flavor profile: Maple, vanilla, and spice. But each of these expressions have other nuances that make them unique. And every one of these spirits have an incredibly thick, syrupy mouth feel. By far the SiB Cask Strength and the Pinch Proof were my favorites. After having these samples Kuhn & I will DEFINITELY be going to pick up another J.T. Meleck bottle soon. Thanks again to Jesse Hutchins for sending these samples!
