The EWU Wrestling Club had a school year highlighted by an increase in participation and success in competition.

Wrestling used to be an Eastern Washington University school sport. However, EWU cut the sport, along with the baseball program, after the 1990 season.

“It pretty much just disappeared,” said Nathan Shaber, the club president. “Now, we’re rebuilding as a club program.”

This school year, the club had a much larger number of wrestlers than in the past.

Fire Alarm/Steam Leak – May 7
A boiler in the mechanical room of Cheney Hall released hot steam, causing the building’s fire alarm to go off.

Malicious Mischief – May 7
Graffiti was found in an elevator located in Pearce Hall. EWU police documented the incident. There are no suspects or leads.

Domestic Violence/Assault – May 7
One resident of the EWU Townhouses reported that their roommate had broken into their home and stolen from them. The roommate claimed that the stolen items were her belongings in the first place. During an EWU police investigation, officers discovered that both residents had threatened each other with violence. Police determined that there was no probable cause of assault and that the second resident did not commit a burglary, because they lived in the home. The issue became a civil case.

Through a bright Saturday morning, Eastern Washington University was the epicenter of color and extravagance: fantastical swishing dresses, half-hidden elf ears against the glittering makeup of those from faraway lands.

Offering food and drink, wares, elixirs, archery and live demonstrations of a trebuchet, students and community filed in for the first ever Renaissance faire at EWU on Saturday, May 17.

The event was organized by the Archery Club and the Fencing Club, who came up with the idea, with the late-inclusion of Eagle Entertainment marking a unique collaboration between organizations. While the event was intended to be held at the iconic Roos Field, all stations were moved indoors to a neighboring building in anticipation of stormy weather, which came in the late afternoon.

Spring Quarter, 2025: lush, bright leaves begin to dot EWU’s campus, second only to welcoming, warm blooming flowers. Amidst the flowers, trees, bushes and squirrels are the college students who inhabit the campus. The college students who, like many, may not be keen to spend a pretty penny on groceries while in the throes of exams, quizzes and late-night studies in preparation for the quarter’s home stretch.

Groceries only get more expensive each passing year and instant-ramen might not always cut it. Stressed, hungry and studying: the stereotypical student.

To break the stereotype, gardening may be the answer. With cramped residence halls, busy schedules or too-small apartments, gardening is often far-off, too difficult, or too complicated to begin, right?

On Sunday, April 20 around 5 p.m. a house neighboring the Alpha Xi Delta sorority house caught fire, then spread to the sorority.

The house sustained serious damage, the sorority’s official statement said. Only one person was home at the time of the fire and nobody was injured.

Four members of the sorority were living in the house. All are now staying with friends or family.

“We want to express a sincere thank you to all the first responders who were on the scene, as well as the Eastern Washington University community who quickly opened their doors to provide our members support, places to sleep and personal supplies to help them get through the night,” the sorority’s statement said.

Even though he considers himself well read in history, Eastern graduate Tim Harrington was not aware of the effects the Hanford site is having on people to this day. That is, until he took the introductory history course, History Today.

The class, taught by history professor Ann Le Bar, gives students the opportunity to search through interview archives featuring the Hanford downwinders — the communities that had radioactive materials carried on the wind to them from the Hanford Nuclear Site in Richland, Washington.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter—not out of anger, but from a deep sense of disappointment and sorrow regarding how non-tenure-track Master of Public Health (MPH) faculty in the College of Health Science and Public Health have been treated. Last Thursday, May 1, I learned that despite exceeding expectations in my annual faculty review, my contract as a lecturer in the MPH program would not be renewed. The reason? A decision by the EWU President, Provost and Dean of our college to shift to an all-tenured faculty model.

If you’ve seen the large, cylindrical gray towers against Cheney’s skyline, then Eastern Washington University’s residential life is front and center: That’s Pearce Hall, one of six in-use dorms on the campus.

Pearce Hall’s unique design is advertised as a fun-fact about dorm life, oft a focal point during campus tours. Still, Pearce Hall showcases one part of an often-overlooked residential necessity: accessibility.

EWU’s campus hosts semi-consistent renovations, with the just-finished upgrade of the Interdisciplinary Science Center, the 2016 renovation of the Pence Union Building, and the revamping of Patterson Hall. The campus remains a mismatched, yet flowing center of new and old.

Commercial Burglary – March 18

At 10:00 a.m., an Eastern Washington University employee reported that gasoline had been stolen from a campus vehicle parked at Surbeck Services. The theft was discovered when the worker noticed tampering and fuel loss in a university van. Upon investigation, EWU detective Robert Schmitter said that police found cuts in the perimeter fence, suggesting forced entry. The theft likely occurred between the afternoon of March 17 and 10:00 a.m. on March 18.

Criminal Trespass – March 28

At 11:25 p.m., a custodian at Showalter Hall reported seeing two male individuals running through an area they were not authorized to be in. Cheney Police responded and set a perimeter. Officers later made contact with a group of five juveniles exiting another section of the building. All individuals involved were referred to juvenile court for trespassing. No property damage or theft was reported.

Scam/Fraud – April 7

A student reported being scammed through a video call by individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers from overseas. The student was accused of money laundering and pressured into transferring a large sum of money through an encrypted messaging app to overseas banks. The student is working with international authorities. The disposition is open.

In the team’s final stretch of home games, Eastern Washington women’s tennis split their two matches.

The Eagles hosted Idaho State on Saturday and lost 6-1. ISU’s team of sophomore Asem Shoybek and junior Stefanya Shalakhova won the first doubles match against EWU’s seniors Isabella Foshee and Kenzington Mann. Freshmen Millie Day and Veronika Zarovna won the second match for the Bengals to win the doubles point.

Eastern Washington tied the score at 1-1 after Foshee won the first singles match against Shoybek in two sets. Foshee has played all of her matches in the top position for the Eagles this season, and her 5 wins are the most on the team.

However, it was all Idaho State for the rest of the match. Day, who leads the Bengals with 12 wins this season, won against Mann in the next match to finish, while Zarovna beat EWU freshman Zoe Pradel in a close three-set match.
