The first printing of Josh Cutler’s new book, “The Seventy Shuls,” has already sold out, and he is preparing a second press for 2026 to meet continued demand. The book, “The Seventy Shuls: Synagogue Life & Yiddishkeit from the Pine Barrens to the Boardwalk,” tells a story that is both local and universal. It is a journey into South Jersey’s forgotten Jewish past, woven through fields, farmlands, and the deep woods of the Pine Barrens. Traces of this world, Cutler explained, are still hidden along former train routes and within towns that once held thriving pockets of Jewish life. His work brings these remnants back into focus for a new generation.

For many people in the South Jersey area, going to the JCC Camps at Medford is not just something to do during the summer. It’s a cherished family tradition.

“About 30 percent of our campers come from a multi-generational family, which I think is incredible for a day camp,” said Jared Kaufman, camp director.

And he has the statistics to back it up. According to camp registration information, of the approximately 1,600 campers at Medford this past summer, at least 404 were second generation and 67 were third generation.

One of the many ways that the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey (JFSNJ) supports community members in need is through financial assistance. The organization recently opened its 2026 applications for financial assistance opportunities, which span early childhood, summer camp, and teen Israel and leadership summer programs.

Thanks to its partnership with the Raymond & Gertrude R. Saltzman Foundation, families in need of financial assistance for early childhood tuition can apply for up to 50% support. To be eligible, families must be registered in a Jewish early childhood program for the 2026-2027 school year in Southern New Jersey.

The Jewish Women’s Foundation of Southern New Jersey (JWF of SNJ), a female-led committee of the Funds Development Board of the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey (JFSNJ), is kicking off another season of awarding grants to deserving organizations.

Starting annually in December, local and international non-profit organizations can submit a letter of intent for consideration to receive funding for a program that brings positive change to the lives of Jewish women and children. In March, letters of intent are reviewed by the Grants Committee and qualifying groups will be selected to submit a full grant application in April.

Congregation Beth Tikvah in Marlton is celebrating the restoration of its Sifrei Torah with a Torah Rededication Ceremony and special events. When Rabbi Pamela Gottfried joined Beth Tikvah in 2024, she realized that many of the Sifrei Torah needed repair. After consulting with a Sofer, an expert scribe, to assess their condition, it was determined that three Sifrei Torah required restoration. In early September when the process was completed, each Sefer Torah was delivered with a Certificate of Kashrut. The three restored Sifrei Torah were used during the High Holiday season. Special services and events are planned for the weekend of December 19-21, including a Shabbat dinner on Friday night, an extended kiddush lunch following Shabbat morning services, and a rededication of the Sifrei Torah on Sunday morning, Dec. 21 at 9:30 a.m. on the seventh day of Chanukah. I’ve been thinking a lot about Jewish Joy lately–the sheer pleasure in living an authentically Jewish life, not a reflexive defense of our right to exist or right to our homeland, but rather embracing the simple joy in being our true selves.

For the last two years, the Jewish people have lived against a backdrop of simmering anxieties as we witnessed antisemitic violence, college encampments, and the plight of our hostages. We’ve fought to be heard, to be seen and even to be valued. Yet from that pain, emerged an undeniable surge in Jewish connection and participation that has created countless sparks of Jewish Joy.
