When I was a kid, I would spend a week at my grandparents' in KY, work on their farm for pay, & go spend it at the Fayette Mall. One year, I picked up an import lp called Black Sabbath's Greatest Hits. Great selections for cheap! The cover was a 16th century painting called "The Triumph of Death" by Pieter Bruegel the Elder - lots of death, darkness, and horrible things.

I guess my grandmother was concerned about it and contacted my parents who questioned me about my choice. It was soon after the church protests of Ozzy Osbourne's concert here at the Huntington Civic Center was covered on MTV. And despite what jy family feared about the album cover and Ozzy's reputation, I was not receiving messages to worship Satan or kill myself or others. Quite frankly, I've always been really bad at picking out the lyrics of songs and couldn't have understood him even if he was trying to do that to me.

There is no doubt that Ozzy & Sabbath left a mark on the musical landscape, essentially inventing heavy metal. So here's to you, Ozzy, the prince of darkness & the court jester all rolled into one.

Here's a great question I posed last year... What did The Cincinnati Reds' coach Sparky Anderson have to do with the death of disco? Tune in to WMUL tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. to hear the answer.

Happy birthday to Disney composer Alan Menken who, I believe, was key to Disney finding new life after a lull in the late '70s & early '80s. Here's a pretty cool, fun cover of a pretty cool, fun song. Jillian Kendall

Birthday wishes to the late Bad Company former singer Brian Howe. A fantastic voice. The first time I heard it was on this song, and I compared it to a cross between Paul Rodgers and Lou Gramm. I guess somebody heard me as he went on to sing with Bad Company's Mach 2 lineup. This is an ultrarare clip that I'd never seen until today. Great tune.

Here's a belated birthday salute to late music producer/songwriter Kim Fowley (7/21/1939 - 1/15/2015). Long before he helped assemble The Runaways with Joan Jett, he co-produced this record which featured drum god Sandy Nelson on a trash can.

Ok, I'll play, but... I don't have one. 1. The first show I went to that was all about me was Joan Jett in '83. Her guitarist was in the hospital; but instead of canceling the show, Joan stepped up, covered all the guitar parts & played the show anyway. Simply amazing.

2. I was once in my car heading to see John Cafferty (Not a fan, but what the hell, it was a free show) in Jacksonville, FL while listening to a Greg Kihn Band cassette. When the album ended, I popped on the radio where they announced he had canceled, But instead of canceling the show, they replaced him with, wait for it... The Greg Kihn Band! One of my all-time favorites.
